Preparation work is under way on a $77 million project to replace, preserve or rehabilitate 15 bridges on Rhode Island's Route 37. "Route 37 is a critical east-west highway that serves 42,000 vehicles per day, connecting Rhode Island's second and third largest cities, as well as I-95, I-295 and U.S.

A connector road from Rhode Island Route 4 to Interstate 95 South in Quonset is one step closer to reality following U.S. Sen. Jack Reed's announcement Sept. 18 that two new federal grants totaling a combined $25.3 million were awarded to the state by U.S.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced that the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM) has reviewed a second set of samples from a soil pile at RIDOT's 6-10 Interchange construction project. The samples, taken by RIDOT's consultant with oversight by DEM site remediation program managers, showed levels of some contaminants above regulatory thresholds.

Rhode Island's two United States senators, along with its congressmen, were joined by other state and local leaders Sept. 2 on the side of State Route 146 in Smithfield to announce much-needed improvements to the roadway, made possible by a federal $65 million INFRA grant.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) marked the start of construction on the much anticipated $265 million Providence Viaduct Northbound Project on Aug. 18 with a ceremonial first dig. The 1,295-ft.-long northbound Providence Viaduct carries Interstate 95 over local roads, highway ramps, Amtrak's Northeast Corridor and the Woonsaquatucket River.

On Aug. 10, the Rhode Island Turnpike and Bridge Authority (RITBA) announced that Phase 3 of construction on the Claiborne Pell Newport Bridge was under way, an operation expected to last through November. The entire project is designed to rehabilitate the 51-year-old structure's roadway deck.

Although only rated as a Category 1 hurricane, Isaias was still a deadly and destructive storm after it made landfall in the United States along the southeast coast of North Carolina on Aug. 3. From there, the storm weakened into a Tropical Storm, but still had enough punch left to inflict significant damage as it roared up the East Coast into the Northeast and New England, bringing with it heavy rains and flooding, and power outages affecting millions and destruction from high winds.

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation is halfway through a project that calls for replacing two bridges in eight days each. Using a self-propelled modular transporter, crews were recently able to set two spans — four sections — on the Centerville Bridge carrying I-95 over Centerville Road (Route 117).

It took a while, but the project on the books for at least three decades is finally under way and moving smoothly. The $410 million 6/10 reconstruction is the largest construction contract put out in the history of the Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT).

The Rhode Island Department of Transportation (RIDOT) announced that within the next two weeks, RIDOT will be advertising a Request for Proposals (RFP) for the Washington Bridge Rehabilitation design-build project. RIDOT is scheduling for the work on the Washington Bridge to start this year with the awarding of the design-build contract this summer.
