Construction and development firm Skanska celebrated the groundbreaking of a new inclusive nature-based playscape in Brackenridge Park in San Antonio on May 12, 2026.
Brackenridge Park is one of San Antonio's most beloved and culturally significant green spaces, serving as a gathering place for families for generations. The two-acre playscape will provide an accessible experience for all children, inspired by the park itself.
The space will feature natural climbing structures, a water channel, upwelling springs, slides, rope swings, a tree canopy walk, an Indigenous camp, a hillside amphitheater, an archaeology dig site and more.
A defining feature of the playscape is its commitment to natural materials. All play elements will be constructed with organic materials wherever possible.
For Skanska, the project represents more than construction. It's an investment in the San Antonio community and an opportunity to build spaces that bring people together and support long-term community growth.
"Today marks the beginning of something truly special for San Antonio and reinforces Skanska's continued dedication to building projects that matter to our city," said Tom Hull, project executive of Skanska USA Building. "Through our partnership with Brackenridge Park Conservancy and the city of San Antonio, we're creating an inclusive space where families can continue to play, explore and connect with the natural and cultural history of Brackenridge Park."
Brackenridge Park spreads 400 acres along the San Antonio River and has served as a gathering place for thousands of years, with a rich legacy of Indigenous roots, Spanish colonial dams and irrigation and Civil War industry that has earned it a listing on the National Register of Historic Places and designation as a National Antiquities Landmark. The Brackenridge Park Conservancy raises funds to preserve and enhance the park's natural, historic, educational and recreational resources for current and future generations.
"This playscape shows what happens when a community comes together with a shared vision," said Chris Maitre, CEO of the Brackenridge Park Conservancy. "San Antonio families told us they wanted a place where all children, regardless of ability, could explore, play and feel a sense of belonging in nature. The Conservancy is proud to help bring that vision to life, creating a space that honors both the people and the land, and reflects our deep connection to the San Antonio River, which has sustained life here for generations."
Skanska said the $9.7 million project builds upon its legacy of transformative public spaces in San Antonio. Skanska recently completed Civic Park at Hemisfair.
Construction completion is expected in the summer of 2027. ♣
