After more than 120 years, the American Public Works Association's (APWA) has rebranded the annual conference as the PWX, or Public Works Expo, replacing the former conference, known as the International Public Works Congress & Exposition. The PWX 2016 conference, which was held Aug. 27 to 31 in Minneapolis, provided new inclusive learning experiences for thousands of public works professionals. Displays included innovations and technologies, and there were new networking opportunities as part of the new learning experience for all generations and all levels of public works professionals.

“APWA's PWX will provide new learning concepts to prepare attendees for the future in their communities,” said Ron Calkins, APWA President, of Ventura, Calif., before the event.

“Some of the new sessions include the 'Lightning Rounds,' which are fast-paced, concise presentations on the hottest topics; 'Innovation Station,' an all new multi-purpose common area at PWX located in The Hub near registration in the Public Works Exchange; and 'Tech Time,' informal sessions to catch up attendees on new tools and resources that are more productive in the workplace.”

The Fleet Workshop also was new and included challenges and solutions for public fleet managers, and included the Monday general sessions with Jeff Havens, two hours on the exhibit floor and presentations and discussions.

In addition, the “APWA Connect Live!” provided attendees with an environment to meet public works experts and network with peers.

“The PWX expanded technology will include wifi throughout the convention center to stay connected, and an event app that includes new features to connect with colleagues and enhance the overall experience,” Calkins said before the event. “Another new option is live streaming for those participants who cannot travel to the event. It will include one education experience during each concurrent timeslot, and can be downloaded to your desk in live stream sessions for only $249. Also, don't forget there is over 90,000 square feet of exhibit space.”
