Why Operators Must Remain in Control in Autonomous Era

Autonomy is not a switch that can be turned on and off, it's a spectrum.

Building toward autonomy requires examining every function and machine to identify opportunities for automation, while recognizing that complete autonomy remains a ways off, according to Leica.

Technology and autonomy cannot fully replace humans on the job site. Humans must continue to make decisions using actionable data, intangible factors and human decision making.

Current Landscape

While digital technologies are now indispensable, the job site will continue to evolve toward more automated workflows and fully autonomous assets.

Today, roughly five percent of the jobsite is autonomous, according to Leica. Over the next decade, the industry could reach 40–50 percent autonomy.

Teams need to ensure they can leverage more automated workflows and autonomous assets to solve real-world problems, not just technical issues.

Machines Cannot Replace Humans

Construction has already automated large swaths of the industry, for example, GPS replaced manual layout, automated self-leveling buckets and safety systems.

Each of these technology improvements seemed small at first but together, they have automated significant aspects of the job site.

However, they all rely on humans, as machines cannot replace the decision making of experienced construction professionals, who can adapt to the dynamic nature of a project site.

As digital technologies become increasingly accessible and user-friendly, integrating machine control, Building Information Modeling (BIM) and reality capture into unified workflows enables the industry to build more complex projects more efficiently. Technology's greatest effect comes when it complements, not replaces, human capability.

Technology Helps Automation

Until AI can analyze soil logs and design files, create estimates, assemble bids and schedules, coordinate logistics and operate machinery safely without human oversight, a fully autonomous job site will remain out of reach.

In the short term, AI can help with materials tracking, geography and planning logistics. In the mid-term, it connects field and office data.

In the long term, and still aspirational at this point, it may automate entire fleets of machines, reducing labor requirements and helping the industry to overcome the skilled labor shortage, according to Leica.

What's Next

Most companies have good data, but lack seamless workflows. Once the challenge of moving data easily between people is solved and automated, organizations can then layer in decision-making automation.

The construction industry's opportunity lies in balancing automation, data security and human expertise to build smarter, safer job sites.

Embracing change and participating in the development of new standards and technologies will be key to unlocking the full potential of autonomy, while ensuring that people remain at the heart of every project.
