Recognizing both the tremendous growth of the upstate New York construction market and its own expanding crane business, Woods CRW is making a major investment in the future with the construction of a new, purpose-built Syracuse facility.

The approximately 16,000-sq.-ft. building, now nearing completion, represents the company's largest investment in its Syracuse operation since establishing a presence in central New York more than two decades ago.

Designed specifically for the sale, rental, service and support of cranes and lifting equipment, the new facility will dramatically expand Woods CRW's capabilities while providing customers with faster service, increased parts availability and a significantly improved overall experience, according to the company.

“This has been on our radar for quite some time,” said Woods CRW President Chris Palmer. “We've grown the business here significantly over the last 10 years, and a lot of that is attributed to the outstanding team we have in Syracuse. With the people we have in place today and the opportunities we're seeing in the market, this was the right time to make this investment.”

Founded 65 years ago and headquartered in Williston, Vt., Woods CRW has steadily expanded from its New England roots into one of the Northeast's premier crane and lifting equipment distributors. Today, the company operates locations in Vermont, New York, Massachusetts and Pennsylvania, with its crane division supporting customers throughout an eight-state territory.

The Syracuse branch serves as Woods CRW's New York headquarters for crane and lifting equipment, representing Link-Belt cranes, National boom trucks, Maeda mini-cranes and mini-crawler cranes, Merlo rotating telescopic handlers and telehandlers, along with a growing fleet of specialized lifting equipment available for sale, rental and service.

Palmer said the decision to construct the new facility reflects Woods CRW's confidence in the central New York market and its long-term commitment to supporting contractors throughout the region.

Major projects such as the Interstate 81 reconstruction, Micron's planned semiconductor manufacturing campus and numerous industrial, warehouse and infrastructure developments continue to drive demand for crane and lifting equipment across upstate New York.

At nearly 16,000 sq. ft., the new facility combines expanded office space, a customer showroom, conference and training rooms, a larger parts warehouse and a service shop designed specifically for crane maintenance and repair.

The centerpiece of the investment is the service department.

Modeled after Woods CRW's Oxford, Mass., operation, the shop features six drive-through service bays, twin 15-ton overhead bridge cranes and approximately 35 ft. of clear interior height, allowing technicians to perform complete boom removals, major component replacements and extensive crane repairs entirely indoors.

“For years we've had to perform some of that work outside,” Palmer said. “Now we'll be able to do those repairs inside in a safer, more efficient environment.”

Extra-wide 26-ft. overhead doors allow crawler cranes to enter the building with their tracks installed, while the overhead crane system enables technicians to safely remove, rebuild and reinstall large boom sections that previously required outdoor work.

According to Palmer, those features translate directly into customer benefits.

“The biggest advantages are quality, efficiency and safety,” he said. “We'll be able to complete repairs faster, reduce downtime for our customers and provide a much better working environment for our technicians.”

The larger facility also allows Woods CRW to substantially increase its parts inventory, improving availability for the growing number of cranes and lifting machines working throughout New York. Customers also have access to the company's online parts portal, where inventory availability and pricing can be viewed around the clock.

The building also was designed with employee development in mind. Dedicated training facilities will allow manufacturers to conduct onsite technical instruction, while abundant natural lighting, energy-efficient LED lighting, modern ventilation systems and waste-oil heating create a cleaner, safer and more comfortable workplace.

“We've invested in talent, tools, training and technology,” Palmer said. “This building supports all four of those areas.”

Field service remains another important part of Woods CRW's customer support strategy. Three fully equipped service trucks operate from the Syracuse branch, allowing technicians to diagnose and repair cranes and lifting equipment directly at customer job sites whenever practical.

“Many of these machines can't simply be brought back to the shop,” said Service and Operations Manager Jeremy Barkley. “Being able to respond in the field is critical, but when major repairs are required, we'll now have a facility that's purpose-built to handle them.”

Construction is expected to be completed this summer, with Woods CRW planning to move into the building shortly thereafter. A formal customer open house is planned for next spring, giving customers an opportunity to tour the facility and see firsthand the investment Woods CRW has made in expanding its service capabilities in central New York.

For Palmer, the project represents far more than a new building.

“It's an investment in our customers, our employees and the future of this market,” he said. “We're building a facility that will allow us to better support the crane industry throughout New York for many years to come.”
