XL 4300 III Excavator Handles Big Jobs On, Off Pavement

Construction Equipment Guide

The 44,000 lb. (19,958 kg) Gradall Model XL 4300 III hydraulic excavator offers the versatility of a tilting, telescoping boom as well as mobility both on and off paved surfaces. Powered by a new Detroit Diesel Mercedes engine, the XL 4300 III delivers noticeably greater bucket breakout and boom forces to increase productivity for high performance jobs, according to the manufacturer.

The XL 4300 III carrier, with a new counterweight and profile, is 9 in. (22.8 cm) shorter with a tail swing that’s been reduced by 12 in. (30.5 cm), enabling the machine to work efficiently in tight quarters and on highways with minimal traffic obstruction.

In the operator cab are other Series III features, including new gauges to monitor hydraulic circuit pressures and an instrument panel switch that can shorten the training cycle. Now, operators can conveniently select the Gradall, Deere or SAE operating patterns for the new electronic joysticks, built into the armrests of the seating module. In-cab comfort enhancements include standard air conditioning, fresh air ventilation, removable front window, AM/FM radio, and a large adjustable seat.

The digging depth of the XL 4300 III is increased to 21 ft. 3 in. (6.5 cm) while the boom reach at groundline is expanded to 30 ft. 4 in. (9.2 m).

Attachments are common throughout most of the Series III models, including excavating, trenching, ditching, dredging and pavement removal buckets. Also available are a grading blade, tree limb shear, live boom, fixed thumb grapple and boom extensions including the Telestick. Due to the excavator’s high pressure, load-sensing hydraulics, the machine can easily move between high production excavating and demolition work to fine finishing, grading and landscape functions.

Unlike conventional excavators’ boom-end rotation devices, the entire Gradall boom tilts 220 degrees so there’s no loss of power during high production jobs. The boom’s telescoping action also requires little overhead clearance, allowing the XL 4300 III to work in tunnels and other locations where conventional booms cannot function. Also unlike conventional booms, operators can monitor the full length of the boom at all times, and benefit from the constant boom forces throughout the entire digging cycle.

The XL 4300 III is stable with front axle oscillation locks. Even without lowering the optional blade or outriggers, operators can perform high production work at the front, rear or either side of the excavator.

The four-wheel-drive undercarriage has rubber tires designed for mobility on rough terrain as well as on highways where they won’t damage the paved surface. Even while the machine is moving, the operator can change between standard and creeper travel mode to efficiently position the machine. Axles are equipped with internal wet-disc type service and parking brakes.

All Series III excavators have almost 70 percent parts commonality, simplifying the task of maintaining inventories to complete common service functions. Series III machines have longer routine service intervals, and most service locations can be reached from ground level. A network of authorized distributors supports all Gradall excavators, supplying service advice and genuine Gradall parts.
