Construction Equipment Guide

Caterpillar has introduced the 963C track-type loader, replacing the 963B with new and innovative designs developed in response to customer input. While it still retains many of the characteristics of the 963B, the updated version incorporates major improvements, including: electronic hydrostatic control; variable hydraulic track motors; speed mode switch; computerized monitoring system; C-series track loader cab/canopy; larger, single fuel tank; and serviceability.

Electronic Hydrostatic Control

The electronic hydrostatic control (EHC) replaces the mechanical linkage controls of the hydrostatic power control unit (HPCU) transmission used in the 963B. The EHC is an electronic control system that eliminates these mechanical control linkages to provide more precise control of the drive train and reduce the risk of component wear. The EHC receives the operator’s inputs from the speed, direction and steering controls, monitors the current conditions in the system and instructs the hydrostatic drive system to respond with the best combination of torque and flow for optimum efficiency to get the job done. The EHC also balances power demand between the equipment and drive train for smooth, consistent power to each.

Variable Displacement Hydraulic Track Motors

Variable displacement hydraulic motors at each track have replaced the fixed displacement motors used on the 963B. The new motors increase the power train efficiency of the 963C. These track motors are now mounted on the final drives to allow for them to be removed alone or as a module along with the final drives, improving overall serviceability.

Speed Mode Switch

A speed mode switch has been added to the controls of the 963C. The operator can choose between either work mode or travel mode to tailor the travel speed of the machine to different applications. When working in tight areas, choosing the slower work mode reduces the machine’s top speed for more precise control of the machine and lower wear of the undercarriage components. In applications such as load and carry, the travel mode allows maximum travel speed.

Computerized Monitoring System

A computerized monitoring system (CMS) is now part of the basic arrangement of the 963C. It interfaces with the EHC for easy electronic calibration of the hydrostatic system, rather than the mechanical linkage adjustments that were necessary with the earlier model’s hydrostatic power control unit. The 963C CMS, now located in front of the operator, also functions as a warning and prevention system. It informs the operator of any occurring or impending problems with the hydrostatic system, and automatically performs self-diagnosis of power train problems to help minimize costly downtime.

C-Series Track Loader Cab/Canopy

The C-series track loader cab/canopy raises the 963C to a new level of operator comfort and efficiency with the following improvements: larger interior enhances operator working environment; quieter working environment with sound levels reduced from 85 to 80 dBa; fully-adjustable armrests support arms in the optimum position for proper control and reduced operator fatigue; a redesigned heating/cooling system with high capacity and more ducts for increased airflow; increased storage space with a lockable storage compartment; tinted glass with more surface area to increase operator viewing area; full-length sun visor offered as standard equipment; intermittent front windshield wiper with variable speed control; and two roof-mounted lights are now standard.

Larger, Single Fuel Tank

A larger, single fuel tank on the 963C provides 6.4 percent greater fuel capacity than the two separate fuel tanks of the 963B combined, for more working hours between refills.

Simpler Machine Serviceability

Improvements have been made to some components in the 963C to enhance its durability and serviceability, including: electronic calibration capability; self-diagnostic capabilities; added quick-disconnect pressure taps, located for easy access; hydraulic motors are now mounted on final drives for easy removal; two separate hydrostatic pumps and drive box are easier and less expensive to service or replace than the previous system with the hydrostatic power control unit; and relocated hydraulic filters for easier access.
