Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recently announced the seven regional winners of its first craft professional of the year competition. One of these regional winners will be chosen as ABC’s Craft Professional of the Year at the ABC national convention in New Orleans.

The regional winners are:

o Region One: Louis Henckel, Klinger Contractors Inc., Albuquerque, NM;

o Region Two: John Plakut, Keupers Construction Inc., Baxter, MN;

o Region Three: Mark Jackson, TDIndustries, Dallas, TX;

o Region Four: Mary Hodge, BE&K Construction, Birmingham, AL;

o Region Five: Douglas Mills, Delcard Associates, Wilmington, DE;

o Region Six: William Shearer, Metal Masters Inc., Indianapolis, IN; and

o Region Seven: David Brooks, Wohlsen Construction Company, Lancaster, PA.

"We congratulate the seven regional winners," said Kirk Pickerel, ABC president and CEO. "The construction craft professional is the heart and soul of the U.S. construction industry, and this association is proud of the professionals we honor today."

ABC’s 2001 National Chairman Henry Kelly initiated the new awards program to recognize the individual each year who stands out as the "cream of the crop" in merit shop craft construction. The winners come from one of ABC’s seven designated regions. The National Craft Professional of the Year, selected from among these regional winners, will receive a new pickup truck donated by ABC National Associate/Supplier member Craftforce, Atlanta.

The craft professionals selected excel in their field, maintain a lifelong commitment to training, and uphold the merit shop philosophy. Most have achieved journeyman status, and many serve as craft training instructors. The winners continually share their time and experience to help grow both the industry and their community. All are employed by ABC member firms.

"These individuals are to be commended for this distinguished recognition," Pickerel said. "ABC member company craft professionals are among the highest trained skilled workers in the field today. They are constantly motivated to improve their skills, stay on the cutting edge of technology and work safely."
