Bobcat of NY Expands Tradition of Growth Spanning Three Generations

On June 28, 2004, Bobcat of NY opened the doors of its new Medford facility. The equipment house is the latest growth spurt in a family business that began approximately 70 years ago.

Bobcat of NY’s President Todd Prigozen and his brother, Vice President Sage Prigozen, follow in the footsteps of their parents, Elliot and Lynn, who served the equipment needs of New York contractors and landscapers for decades. This tradition of family enterprise traces its roots to the mid-1930s with Sylvan Greenbaum, Lynn’s father and the founder of Sylvan Equipment.

Now the family business has entered a new century, evolving to become Bobcat of NY with five locations — Elmsford, Westbury, Maspeth and Medford in New York and a branch in Metro Dade, FL — an expansion they attribute to a combination of highly personalized service and willingness to grow with the times.

The new Bobcat facility at 24 Industrial Blvd. in Medford is actually an outgrowth of a smaller facility established in neighboring Holtsville eight years ago. Customers on eastern Long Island found the blend of family commitment, quality equipment and prompt service to be a great advantage, and both Bobcat and its customers prospered.

However, the Prigozen brothers, together with General Manager Robert Sonnick, knew it was time to expand when the parts department had to use the service shop for storage.

“Although it only caused a slight increase in turn-around time, it was an unacceptable delay,” explained Todd. “Our staff needed to continue servicing customers as efficiently as possible, and we certainly required more room for our rental fleet. The rental division is experiencing tremendous growth as more and more businesses take advantage of this service.”

Three generations of experience and knowledge are reflected in the new facility’s design. The 20,000-sq.-ft. area includes a spacious showroom with user-friendly sales and rental areas, modern service shop, parts department and a well-stocked equipment warehouse.

The warehouse resembles a contractor’s dream with organized rows of Bobcat equipment: skid-steer loaders, track loaders, mini-excavators, and a wide variety of attachments and technologically-advanced units — the Toolcat utility work machine and VersaHandler telescopic forklift/tool carrier.

These Bobcat classics are now joined by Stow equipment such as water pumps, concrete mixers and walk-behind saws, and the Ingersoll-Rand family of ride-on rollers and other compaction equipment, air compressors, jackhammers, electric breakers, demo saws and light towers. The extensive product line fills the diverse needs of New York businesses, and reflects the Bobcat motto — “One Tough Animal.” Chris Hamblet, branch manager of the new facility, and the experienced staff is already in place, including Jim Badaracco, sales manager; Ruby Petruccelli, parts manager; and Kathy Fromwiller, office manager.
