James Carville and Mary Matalin, consultants united by marriage while divided by politics, will be keynote speakers at the national conference of the Construction Management Association of America at the Grand Hyatt Washington Center, Washington, D.C., September 7-9. The Conference theme is "Capitol-ize on the Value of a Construction Manager."

The couple’s book All’s Fair: Love, War and Running for President, detailed how they blended domestic harmony with the turmoil of running opposing presidential campaigns. Matalin was a key strategist for President George H. W. Bush’s 1992 re-election effort, while Carville helped guide Arkansas Gov. Bill Clinton to the White House.

Carville and Matalin each reached national prominence through a series of increasingly visible positions. Carville helped Democratic candidates win major races in Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Georgia before signing on with the Clinton campaign. Matalin, after working for President Ronald Reagan and the first President Bush, hosted the CNN television show Crossfire and served as chief of staff for the Republican National Committee. Most recently she has worked in the White House as assistant to President George W. Bush and counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney.

The Carville/Matalin presentation will take place at 8 a.m. Monday, September 8. Other highlights of the convention will include presentation of CMAA’s 2003 Project Achievement Awards, which honors projects that demonstrate excellence in construction and program management. The musical comedy troupe The Capitol Steps will also perform.

CMAA is organizing a professional development program of 24 educational seminars and workshops, including a high-level panel discussion of project owners.

CMAA is an association of more than 2,000 firms and professionals who provide management services to owners in the planning, design and construction of capital projects of all types.
