Convention to Attract Many Industry Leaders to Orlando

Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) will host its 2005 national convention, Feb. 19 to 22, at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Hotel, Orlando, FL. ABC represents 23,000 construction and construction-related firms in 79 chapters nationwide.

“At this year’s annual convention, ABC will mark its 55th year of service to this industry, and to the cause of free enterprise,” said Gary Roden, 2005 ABC national chairman and executive vice president and chief operating officer, AGUIREEcorporation, Dallas.

“The ABC national convention will bring together general contractors and specialty contractors from across America to explore the trends, opportunities and outlook for the industry. Among noteworthy convention events, America’s top construction projects will be honored at the ABC Excellence in Construction Awards program, and the future leaders of our industry will compete in the ABC Construction Craft Championships,” said Roden.

The ABC National Convention includes the following events:

• Sat., Feb. 19, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Student Chapter Management Competition: Round One/All Teams

More than 20 colleges and universities from across the nation compete in this intensive construction management contest, featuring a comprehensive bid management competition.

• Sun., Feb. 20, 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Opening General Session.

ABC inducts its 2004 national executive committee, including 2005 ABC National Chairman Gary Roden. Roden will present his vision for the industry and the association at this event.

Keynote speaker Eric Weihenmayer, who in 2001 became the first blind person in history to reach the world’s highest peak — Mount Everest — will speak on the importance of teamwork in overcoming life’s challenges.

• Mon., Feb., 21, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

Craft Championships

See more than 100 craft professionals from across the nation compete head-to-head in a craft skills competition. Observe competitions and interview contestants in crafts including carpentry, electrical, mechanical, pipefitting, masonry, metal building, fire sprinkler, welding and more.

• Mon., Feb. 21, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Excellence in Construction and Safety Awards

The most remarkable construction projects of 2004 will be recognized in this ceremony. Projects in 46 construction categories, from commercial and industrial, to public works/environmental and renovation will be featured with project leaders on hand to receive their awards.

In addition, the nation’s leaders in job-site safety are recognized.

• Mon., Feb. 21, 1:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Student Chapter Management Competition: Round Two/Finalists

Five finalist teams from more than 20 colleges across the nation will compete for top awards in this intensive construction management competition, featuring presentations to a panel of judges acting as company owners.

• Tues., Feb. 22, 8:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.

Construction Careers Awards Breakfast

The nation’s top craft professionals are recognized: winners of Construction Craft Championships; the construction craft instructor of the year; student chapter excellence awards; construction management competition winners; excellence in teaching awards; and the annual ABC Craft Professional of the Year is announced — the Craft Professional of the Year receives a new pickup truck.

• Sun., Feb. 20, 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m., and Mon., Feb. 21, 8:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.

ABC’s Construction Showcase is featured.

On Monday, Feb. 21, complimentary passes are available for the Construction Craft Championships competition and for the Construction Showcase.
