One of the biggest names among Florida contractors has died.

Frank M. Hubbard, 87, died Aug. 4, 2007.

Hubbard was born in Florence, S.C., on Feb. 15, 1920, the same year his father, Francis Evans Hubbard founded Hubbard Construction Company.

In addition to being widely regarded as a legend in the road building industry Hubbard was a giant in the local and national world of philanthropy and community service and a decorated veteran of WWII. He held executive and leadership positions and received awards and honors in more industry organizations than can be counted, as well as founding, supporting and participating in the leadership of an even greater number of organizations that have played iconic roles in the development and growth of Central Florida business, healthcare, community service and all areas of charitable giving.

His company, which he led since his father’s death in 1954, is responsible for several high-profile projects, such as the launch pads at Cape Canaveral, the foundations for the Walt Disney World monorail system and the elevated tracks for landscape maintenance at the airports in Orlando and Tampa. It also construction or renovated major sections of Interstates 4, 10, 75, 95, as well as the Greeneway, the Southern Connector, the Beeline Expressway and the Florida Turnpike.

He is survived by his wife, Ruth; son, Evans and his wife Linda of Orlando; daughter, Connie Miller and her husband Mike of St. Louis, Mo.; foster son, Dr. J. E. Mesa and his wife Michelle of Madisonville, Ky.; grandsons, Michael Hubbard, James Hanberry, Brandon Miller and Joseph Mesa. His granddaughter, Lauren Miller, predeceased him. He will be remembered by those who knew him with love and profound respect and by those who only knew of him as a role model to be admired and emulated.
