Granite Construction Inc. announced Oct. 28 that Granite Construction Company, a wholly-owned subsidiary, in consortium with Bombardier Transit Corporation, has signed a contract with the Transit Systems Development LLC(1) for the design, construction and equipping of a 2.3-mi. (3.7 km) extension to the Las Vegas Resort Corridor Monorail.

The Phase II project will extend the monorail system to downtown Las Vegas. This is a “line-item” design-build consortium wherein Granite will be responsible for design and construction of the civil infrastructure (i.e. guideway, stations, and maintenance building) and Bombardier will be responsible to design, furnish and install the monorail vehicles and vehicle operating systems.

Granite’s portion of the total contract price is valued at $200.3 million. This contract will not be added to the company’s backlog until project funding is in place and a notice to proceed has been received, which is expected in mid-2004.

Granite’s subcontractors include Parsons Transportation Group, the principal design engineer, and Gensler Associates, who will provide architectural services.

Granite and Bombardier are currently completing a 4-mi. (6.4 km) monorail system in Las Vegas with five new stations and the retrofit of two existing stations. That entire Phase I system will consist of nine four-car trains operating between eight resort properties and the Las Vegas Convention Center and is located on the east side of Las Vegas Boulevard, extending from the MGM Grand Hotel to the Sahara Hotel.

The Phase II extension project will continue from the Sahara Hotel north on Paradise Road and Main Street to downtown Las Vegas, terminating near the Fremont Street Experience. The new contract will provide for the additional guideway, four new stations, and a new monorail vehicle inspection and maintenance building.

Work on the project is expected to commence following the closing of project funding in mid-2004 with completion scheduled for mid-2007.

Granite is one of the nation’s largest diversified heavy civil contractors and construction materials producer. Granite Construction Company serves public and private sector clients through its offices nationwide.
