Construction Equipment Guide

Kobelco America Inc. has extended its line of hydraulic lattice boom crawler cranes with the introduction of the 250-ton (225 t) CK2500. It features strong lifting capabilities, exceptionally long reach, and a short swing radius. These features make the crane extremely productive, even in close quarters.

Kobelco’s new CK2500 crane also is designed for fast and economical transport. It quickly erects and disassembles on site with no assistance. In addition, it features a powerful 315-hp (234 kW) Mitsubishi engine with an advanced engine speed sensing (ESS) system to make all engine operations very smooth.

Winches provide large rope capacity, strong lifting capacities and fast line speed. Front and rear drum are 24.3 by 32.8 in. (61 by 83 cm) wide and both are grooved for 1-in. (2.5 cm) wire rope. Stored rope capacity for both drums is 1,969 ft. (600 m). Working rope capacity for the front drum is 1,575 ft. (480 m) and for the rear drum is 1,263 ft. (385 m). Rated line pull for both drums is 29,500 lbs. (13,380 kg) and can carry to the seventh layer of rope.

The CK2500’s maximum lifting capacity obtained with base boom of 50 ft. (15.2 m) and a 14-ft. (4.2 m) working radius is 500,000 lbs. (226,796 kg). At 250 ft. (76.2 m) of main boom and 40 ft. (12.9 m) of jib, the lifting capacity is 59,000 lbs. (26,761 m) and with 140 ft. (42.6 m) of main boom and 100 ft. (30.4 m) of luffing jib, the lifting capacity is 118,000 lbs. (53,523 kg).

The CK2500 also has an outstanding reach, which makes it very easy to overcome any obstacles on the job site. Its maximum boom length is 300 ft. (91.4 m), its maximum boom and jib length is 250 plus 100 ft. (76.2 plus 30.4 m) and the maximum boom and luffing jib length is 200 plus 170 ft. (60.9 plus 51.8 m), all of which can be lifted from the ground unassisted.

The CK2500’s optional luffing jib makes the crane even more flexible because it provides the extra reach and better angle to help operators reach out and over obstacles such as tall buildings. This is invaluable when changing the scrubbers on a tall smokestack or when installing air conditioning units on the roof of a tall building.

Working large areas from small spaces is where the Kobelco CK2500 can really shine. It boasts a swing radius of just 19 ft. 8 in. (5.9 m) so it can be positioned for maximum effectiveness anywhere on the job site. Another valuable feature in tight quarters is the low-speed swing control, which lets the operator swing the crane slowly even at high engine speeds.

Because time is money on any job, Kobelco designed the CK2500 with a counterweight and crawler self-handling system that lets an experienced three-man crew unload and erect the crane quickly, usually in half a day. It can be ready to work within hours of its arrival on site without the need of an assist crane or other costly equipment.

Kobelco’s CK2500 crane has a SAE gross 315 hp (235 kW) Mitsubishi 6D24-TCEC diesel engine. The six-cylinder engine is water-cooled, fuel-injected, intercooled and turbocharged to deliver all the lifting and traveling power an operator could ever need, the instant it’s needed. The CK2500 also features a computer-controlled engine speed sensing (ESS) system that reduces engine speed changes during simultaneous operations, for smoother, more efficient performance in any situation, regardless of the size of the load.
