The new closure period for the Medford Street Bridge began during the late evening of May 17, 2019, and will run through spring of 2020.

The Green Line Extension (GLX) project and the city of Somerville High School (SHS) Project have accelerated the scheduled closure of the Medford Street Bridge in Gilman Square at Pearl Street.

The new closure period for the Medford Street Bridge began during the late evening of May 17, 2019, and will run through spring of 2020.

The closure will provide the SHS Project with staging areas to perform crane work this spring and summer while enabling GLX to modify the bridge span and perform structural improvements to accommodate new Green Line tracks below.

For the duration of this closure, all vehicular traffic will be detoured around the work zone via Pearl Street and McGrath Highway. Detour maps and directions including local pedestrian and bicycle routes are available on www.mass.gov/GLX in the Bridge Closures section.

Recent schedules had projected the Medford Street Bridge would close in July 2019. This new timeline was established after careful coordination between GLX and the SHS Project, which are progressing in close physical proximity to one another. Advancing the Medford Street Bridge closure by six weeks will provide critical logistical benefits for both projects.

For more detailed information on the Medford Street Bridge closure and other local road closures now in effect, including detours for vehicular, pedestrian, and bike traffic, visit the GLX website at Mass.gov/GLX.
