Tom Stahr, chair of the National Demolition Association’s disaster response committee, has been appointed to the board of the newly formed U.S.A. chapter of The International Emergency Management Society (TIEMS).

TIEMS is a global forum for education, training, certification and policy in emergency and disaster management. The U.S.A. chapter was formed at the TIEMS 2014 U.S.A. Conference held at the University of Southern Mississippi in Hattiesburg, Miss. The new organization is led by Kay Goss, former associate FEMA director during the Clinton Administration and current CEO of World Disaster Management.

At the University of Southern Mississippi gathering, Stahr presented a paper on recognizing and removing barriers preventing utilization of demolition and debris removal resources during a disaster response. The paper is co-authored by Mark Shaurette and Randy Rapp, professors with Purdue University College of Technology.

“I’m honored to serve on the board of the new U.S.A. chapter and look forward to working closely with the disaster response community as a representative of the National Demolition Association, the leading trade organization for our industry,” Stahr, a senior consultant with Environmental Resources Management, said. “Based on our real-world experiences filling key roles at past disaster sites, we know we have the skills and resources to help first responders and other groups facilitate a quicker, more effective, safer response and save lives.”

Earlier this year, Stahr presented an additional paper on the benefits of public/private collaboration to emergency management experts from around the world at a conference at Purdue University.
