RENO, Nev. (AP) — University of Nevada officials have scrapped plans to demolish the Fleischmann Planetarium.

Officials said the planetarium building will be used in the future for an undetermined purpose. Meanwhile, the planetarium’s programs will have to find a new home within the next few years.

The decision to save the building comes after university officials agreed in early January to delay its demolition.

"This is an extremely important building and institution," said Ron James, Nevada’s state historian. The university will work with Reno and Sparks to see if either city wants to pursue a proposal made three years ago by the Friends of the Planetarium to build a Great Basin Science Center that would include the planetarium programs.
