Skanska announced that it has been awarded the $102 million contract for the port of Los Angeles Avalon pedestrian bridge and promenade gateway project in Los Angeles, Calif., by the port of Los Angeles.
The Avalon pedestrian bridge and promenade gateway project is community-focused and will enhance accessibility, safety and public use of the promenade gateway while supporting the port of Los Angeles's broader waterfront revitalization efforts.
"This project reflects our commitment to delivering infrastructure that strengthens communities,"â¯said James Bailey, executive vice president of Skanska USA Civil's West Coast operations. "By creating a safe, gradeseparated connection over an active rail corridor, we'reâ¯giving the community easyâ¯access the Wilmington waterfront promenade and the public spaces that continue to transform this area. The delivery of the pedestrian bridge willâ¯showcase ourâ¯technical expertise to complete a project that not only enhances pedestrian safety and mobility but also supports the port of Los Angeles' long term vision for a more connected, resilient and accessible waterfront."
The project will transformâ¯twelve acresâ¯ofâ¯former industrial land into open space that features aâ¯landscaped entry plaza, historic walk and overlook, an open terrace seating area, pedestrian pathways, community gathering areas, two parking lots, one restroom and a 40-ft.-tall architectural sundial.
The pedestrian bridge is planned as a signatureâ¯concreteâ¯cable-stayed arch bridge and willâ¯offer a safe crossing point over working rail operations. This project will directly connect to the recently completed Wilmington waterfront promenade.
The project began in March of 2026 and is expected to be completed in August 2028.
