MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) Developers have announced plans to build a new hotel in downtown Montpelier.

At a press conference with Republican Gov. Phil Scott and city officials, the Bashara family said that it plans to build an 89-room Hampton Inn and Suites behind the Capitol Plaza Hotel, which it owns.

The Capitol Plaza will continue to operate.

Officials say the $17 million project will include a parking structure for up to 300 cars.

Mayor John Hollar said the city and its leaders are working hard to add jobs and attract new residents. He said “this development is an important part of that effort.”

Fred Bashara said the family will continue to work on its plans and permits and hopes to start construction in 2018.
