The Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) announced its 2026 construction season, outlining more than 400 highway improvement projects aimed at modernizing the state's transportation system, improving safety for all users and supporting economic growth.
WisDOT highlighted several significant projects scheduled or under way across the state:
- Work continues on the I-41 expansion between Appleton and De Pere.
- Reconstruction of WIS 21 between Omro and Oshkosh is under way. The highway will be closed and detoured until November 2026.
- Resurfacing projects on I-43 in Sheboygan County will bring lane and ramp restrictions through November 2026.
- Construction is under way on I-94 between 70th Street and 16th Street near Milwaukee, with long-term lane and ramp closures and shifting traffic patterns.
- The I-41 rebuild in Milwaukee County enters its final year.
- Work on the I-94 bridges over the St. Croix River near Hudson will cause lane closures and slowdowns.
- U.S. 63 in Cumberland will close to through traffic as crews replace a culvert at Beaver Dam Lake.
- Reconstruction continues along the U.S. 51 corridor between Stoughton and McFarland in Dane County.
- Crews are rebuilding the I-90/94 interchange near Tomah.
- Bridge work continues on I-39/90/94 over the Wisconsin River in Columbia County, with reduced speeds and lane shifts in place.
- In the Rhinelander area, U.S. 8 will be reconstructed between WIS 47 and Oneida County G, with new roundabouts planned at WIS 17 and County G intersections.
- Pavement repairs are scheduled on U.S. 51 and WIS 29 near Wausau this summer, bringing additional lane and ramp closures.
Officials said the extensive construction program underscores the state's ongoing investment in infrastructure, while emphasizing the need for drivers to remain alert and patient in work zones throughout the season.
