Wisconsin Governor James Doyle recognized the Manitowoc Crane Group as an ’Exemplary Employer’ in a ceremony held during the annual Workforce Development Conference in May in Appleton, WI.

MCG was one of seven companies receiving the award this year. Winners fulfill criteria including hiring and retaining a diverse workforce, making unique efforts that enhance employee training, and demonstrating initiatives that help low-income, displaced, entry-level, mature and/or minority individuals to enter the workforce.

Sandra Destree, from the Manitowoc Country Job Center, nominated MCG primarily because of a 10-week welding training program the company sponsors in conjunction with the Job Center and Lakeshore Technical College. MCG has hired 28 program graduates to date, and hopes to hire future graduates from this successful program.

“Manitowoc Crane Group works closely with the center to help identify dislocated workers and economically disadvantaged adults eligible for participation in the program,” Destree said. “The company participates in all phases of recruitment, interviews applicants, and periodically meets with trainees during the training process to assure them that jobs are waiting if they successfully complete the program.”

MCG’s efforts have gained the praise of many in the region, including Wisconsin State Sen. Joe Leibham.

“The Manitowoc Crane Group’s dedication to creating an efficient, competent, and diverse work environment has helped the Manitowoc area and Wisconsin economy grow. You should be proud that for over 80 years MCG has produced, outfitted, and designed cranes in the Manitowoc area that help construction all over the world,” he said

Chuck Mogged, senior vice president of operations for the Americas at Manitowoc Crane Group, said the program is a win-win situation for Manitowoc Crane Group. “We benefit from a highly trained, skilled, and efficient workforce, while at the same time helping to provide employment for individuals in the area.”

The Exemplary Employer award program is held in conjunction with the Workforce Development Conference, an annual event that focuses on how Wisconsin-based companies can create and expand high-end job opportunities that will increase earning power for Wisconsin families.
