Gov. Tom Wolf announced that 42 highway, bridge, transit, ports and waterways and bike and pedestrian projects will be in line for $49 million in funding through the Multimodal Transportation Fund.
“With these resources, we can improve transportation connections down to the local level and make a big difference for communities,” Wolf said. “These investments reflect our commitment to all modes of transportation, both statewide and locally.”
Reflecting Gov. Wolf's and PennDOT Secretary Leslie S. Richards' emphasis on helping counties and municipalities tackle their backlog of needed bridge repairs, 14 of the 42 grants were awarded for local bridges.
“We simply must help our local partners address these critical links to ensure they remain open and in good repair,” Richards said. “Losing these links to weight restrictions or outright closures would place too great a burden on local communities and these grants will help avoid such outcomes.”
On Oct. 5, PennDOT began accepting applications for the next round of funding for grants under the Multimodal Transportation Fund.
PennDOT will evaluate the applications and make selections based on such criteria as safety benefits, regional economic conditions, the technical and financial feasibility, job creation, energy efficiency and operational sustainability.
Applications are due by Nov. 15, 2018. PennDOT expects to announce grant recipients next year for the funding that becomes available in July 2019.

City of McKeesport — $2,951,500 for improvements to the existing Steel Valley Trail through the RIDC Park along the Monongahela River, linking the river to the McKeesport Multimedia Center, and improvements to the city's municipal parking garage that offers trail parking.
Ross Township — $708,130 for the installation of an eastbound right-turn lane on Sewickley Oakmont Road at Perry Highway in conjunction with approximately 700 ft. of sidewalk on the north side of Sewickley Oakmont Road from Perry Highway to Carriage Drive.
Exeter Township — $2,955,670 to design and construct pedestrian improvements on Perkiomen Avenue, including continuous sidewalk, pedestrian lighting, pedestrian buffer, trees, and defined entrances and exits for business driveways.
Bristol Township — $884,581 to install pedestrian safety and mobility facilities along U.S. Route 13 from the Croydon train station to Janet Avenue, including sidewalks, traffic calming measures, and storm water improvements.
Summit Township — $1,299,526 to reconstruct drainage, resurface roadway and improve shoulders on the Bonniebrook Road corridor.
University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown — $175,137 for Phase Two of the pedestrian connectivity project, REACHland Connect, including installation of 2,920 l ft. of sidewalk along Theater Drive and Eisenhower Boulevard that will connect to work under way in Phase One and two painted crosswalks at the Theater Drive intersections to ensure safe pedestrian crossings.
College Township — $1,149,041 to complete multimodal improvements on Pike Street (SR 3011), including handicap-accessible ramps, curb extensions, sidewalks for pedestrians and transit users, highlighted crosswalks and storm water management.
Radnor Township — $1,302,979 to complete a set of roadway and signal improvements at the intersection of King of Prussia and Eagle Roads, including adding turn lanes and a new traffic signal, in partnership with Cabrini and Eastern Universities.
Borough of Union City — $121,800 to replace deteriorated, unsafe sidewalks and install sidewalks where none exist to increase accessibility to a preferred walking route to schools in the southern portion of the community.
Ridgway Township — $1,212,341 for reclamation of 7.83 mi. of roadway in Elk County, which includes 4.07 mi. of Spring Creek Township-owned, 2.34 mi. of Ridgway Township-owned and 1.42 mi. of state-owned roadway.
Hopewell Township — $140,240 to improve the radii of the intersection of Upper and Lower Ridge Roads and resurface Upper Ridge Road.
Lebanon Valley College — $400,000 to widen an existing pedestrian bridge over the Norfolk Southern railroad to enhance the connection between Lebanon Valley College's north and south campuses and the greater Annville area.
Lower Macungie Township — $152,053 for improvements that will provide safe multimodal access to commercial and recreational facilities on Hamilton Boulevard from neighborhoods to the south, including installation of 500 ft. of sidewalk; textured crosswalks and ramps at Krocks Road, Krocks Court, and Hamilton Boulevard; and a 90-ft. sidewalk between Wawa and the turnpike overpass.
Borough of Coopersburg — $622,287 to complete streetscape, traffic, bicycling, and pedestrian improvements to Main Street (SR 2045), including ADA-compliant pedestrian crosswalks at three key intersections, and 0.16 mi. of curb, sidewalk, pedestrian lighting, signs, and pavement marking.
Luzerne County — $533,312 to undertake necessary road improvements on North and South Beisels Road and add a bike lane.
Valley Crest Real Estate, LP — $3,000,000 to reduce traffic, traffic movements, and traffic phases at critical intersections along Route 315 near the Mohegan Convention Center with the installation of coordinated traffic signals at nine locations and construction of road improvements to facilitate access to the former Valley Crest facility.
River Valley Transit — $1,193,306 for the realignment of Franklin Street; reconstruction of Basin Street; addition of bike lanes, transit stops, ADA ramps, sidewalks, lighting and storm water management.
City of Farrell — $1,000,000 for improvements to Emerson Avenue, including resurfacing the roadway, installing ADA-compliant curb ramps, replacing damaged, broken sidewalk sections and installing a public bike rack.
Tobyhanna Township — $1,650,000 to widen Long Pond Road (SR 0940), realign the I-380 southbound exit ramp, and add sidewalks, decorative street lighting and a multi-use trail along SR 0940.
Lower Gwynedd Township — $1,026,616 for roadway widening, pedestrian upgrades, and traffic signal improvements to improve efficiency and safety at the Bethlehem Pike, Norristown Road and Sumneytown Pike intersection.
Upper Providence Township — $927,000 to eliminate a 50-ft. offset between Jacobs Street and Walnut Street at their signalized intersection with Bridge Street (Route 29) by realigning Jacobs Street to intersect Bridge Street directly opposite Walnut Street.
Horsham Township — $3,000,000 to widen Horsham Road and Limekiln Pike to provide additional capacity through the intersection and install two new traffic signals, 5-ft. sidewalks, ADA ramps and a new signalized pedestrian crossing.
Hatfield Township — $1,919,000 to realign the Cowpath Road (SR 0463) and Orvilla Road (SR 1004) intersection and install sidewalks and ADA-compliant pedestrian accommodations.
Philadelphia Streets Department — $3,000,000 to construct multimodal safety improvements to Market Street from 6th to 2nd Streets, changing from four travel lanes to three; adding a protected bike lane in each direction; constructing floating bus islands and pedestrian islands; and improving two intersections.
Provco Penrose LLC — $1,300,000 to support transportation improvements associated with the transformation of a previous heavy metal shredding facility at 2600 Penrose Avenue to a proposed convenience store with gas and a separate restaurant facility.
Philadelphia Streets Department — $2,682,934 for critically needed traffic safety improvements on a Vision Zero High Injury Corridor, Parkside Avenue, including pedestrian islands, LED lighting, intersection improvements and a new side path.
Philadelphia Regional Port Authority — $1,500,000 to upgrade two container cranes by replacing the crane drive system and converting the cranes from diesel to electric, extending the useful life of the cranes and creating an opportunity to attract new business and diversify operations.
Philadelphia Streets Department — $900,000 to construct eight new bus plazas at four key intersections along Roosevelt Boulevard to support SEPTA's next segment of Boulevard Direct, which will ultimately connect to the Wissahickon Transportation Center in Manayunk.
Armstrong County — $471,851 to assist Cowanshannock, Kiskiminetas, and Perry Townships with replacing their structurally deficient bridges, including Blanco bridge, Church Road in Cowanshannock; Dunmire bridge, Dunmire Road in Kiskiminetas; and Millers Eddy bridge (two structures), Millers Eddy Road in Perry.
Bedford Township — $230,000 to replace the existing reinforced concrete slab bridge on Belden Road with a new precast concrete box culvert.
Centre County — $1,365,000 for major rehabilitation of three structurally deficient, large-span bridges, including Lower Coleville Road bridge in Spring Township, Front Street bridge in Curtin Township, and Fox Gap Road bridge in Miles Township.
West Pikeland Township — $1,169,000 to replace an existing one-lane bridge over Pickering Creek with a two-lane bridge, raise the Horseshoe Trail roadway, and widen the waterway opening to prevent frequent flooding that is occurring now.
Elk Township — $87,500 to replace Black Road bridge, a structurally deficient and weight restricted bridge, restoring full access for residential, commercial, and recreational traffic.
Monroe Township — $95,302 to replace the large pipe system in Pennsy Road with an aluminum box culvert to provide access for residential, commercial, agricultural, and recreational traffic.
Irvona Borough — $1,050,000 for replacement of the Hopkins Street bridge.
Licking Creek Township — $56,950 for structural repairs to Licking Creek Township Bridge 2 which carries Mill Road (T-417) over Licking Creek. Repairs are necessary to allow school buses and emergency vehicles to cross the bridge.
Hanover Township — $535,357 to replace Loomis Park bridge, which provides pedestrian and vehicular access to the Loomis Park development.
Foster Township — $1,699,820 to replace two structurally deficient bridges that carry Fairview Heights Road and Harrisburg Run Road over Foster Brook and additional road, scour, and safety repairs.
Barrett Township — $689,475 to rebuild the closed bridge on Old Canadensis Road.
Philadelphia Authority for Industrial Development — $3,000,000 to replace the 1898 timber deck structure supporting the main entrance (Broad Street) to the Navy Yard.
Hegins Township — $479,098 to replace Forest Drive bridge, an existing one-lane bridge that spans Deep Creek and is in poor overall condition with deteriorated concrete facing with exposed stones at water's edge.
Washington Township — $477,602 to replace the deteriorating bridge along Kutz Road, north of its intersection with Sweet Arrow Lake Road (SR 3002) and remove the existing load posting (29 tons).
