Granite Construction Inc., announced July 31 it has been awarded a $318 million contract by the New York State Department of Transportation for the construction of phase two of the Kosciuszko Bridge in Brooklyn, N.Y. The contract will be included in Granite's second quarter 2017 backlog.

Granite is responsible for replacement of the westbound span of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (I-278) Bridge over Newtown Creek. The scope of work includes the construction of a new cable stayed bridge, approach spans and connectors in Brooklyn and Queens, retaining walls, concrete paving, and related earthwork. The new bridge will have four lanes and a 20-foot-wide bikeway/walkway.

Once complete, the new Kosciuszko Bridge will improve traffic safety, reduce congestion and improve travel speeds on this segment of the I-278 with wider driving lanes, standard shoulder widths, extra lanes in both directions, and a reduced road incline. The reduction of dozens of fewer feet in height mean less of a climb which will make it easier for trucks to maintain consistent speeds on the bridge.

Construction is scheduled to begin in July 2017 and conclude in summer 2019.

This is just one of Granite Construction's recent projects along the East Coast. Just recently, the company was awarded a $441 million joint contract with Archer Western to work on the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington D.C.
