As American Wind Week 2020 kicked off with a tribute to the wind industry workforce the week of Aug. 9, the outlook for the renewable energy sector as a whole is strong. A multitude of both wind and solar projects as well as retooling plans launched this summer across the country have buoyed the heavy machinery industry, creating both temporary and ongoing construction jobs.

A joint venture between Mammoet and Giant Heavy Machinery Services has started working with Sing Da Marine Structure Corporation, a marine engineering subsidiary of China Steel Corporation to provide assembly, transportation and load-out services for Taiwan's first locally fabricated wind turbine jacket foundations, on site at its manufacturing facility.

On July 21, New York announced a giant solicitation for up to 2,500 megawatts of offshore wind capacity, the largest of its kind in U.S. history. The contract requirements include investing in one of 11 prequalified New York ports for staging, construction, manufacturing, operations and maintenance activities — thereby retaining economic activity within the state.

New Jersey wants to be known for more than just its shores and casinos. It aims to be the hub of the nation's nascent offshore wind energy industry. On June 16, Gov. Phil Murphy (D) announced the construction of what he calls the country's first port dedicated to constructing the colossal turbines that may one day dot the East Coast horizon as Northeastern and Mid-Atlantic states rush to build more renewable energy.

A U.S. subsidiary of Denmark's largest energy company is proposing a 60-turbine, $295 million wind farm in Bee County. Ørsted plans to begin construction on the Helena Wind project in March 2021, to be completed in second quarter 2022, according to a tax abatement request it submitted to the Bee County Commissioners Court on Feb.

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) Power Company of Wyoming has moved a step closer to clearing a final environmental requirement for its massive Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project in Carbon County. The Casper Star-Tribune reports that the Bureau of Land Management recently released the third environmental assessment of the wind farm for public comment.

Xcel Energy announced Aug. 28 that construction on the 522-megawatt Sagamore Wind Project in Roosevelt County will commence in the fourth quarter. Once completed, it will provide enough clean, affordable electricity to power close to 194,000 typical homes annually, driving millions of dollars in economic benefits to the eastern part of the state.

CASPER, Wyo. (AP) A request has been approved to extend the construction schedule of Wyoming's largest wind farm project. The Casper Star-Tribune reported Carbon County commissioners on July 2 OK'd the new schedule for the Chokecherry and Sierra Madre Wind Energy Project as it works through federal, state and county permits, as well as environmental requirements.

Infrastructure and Energy Alternatives Inc. ("IEA" or the "Company"), a leading infrastructure construction company with specialized energy and heavy civil expertise, announced two new wind energy project awards valued at approximately $150 million. One award is for construction of the Las Majadas Wind Farm in Willacy County, southern Texas.

A Liebherr LG 1750 provided the primary lifting power for Trand Inc. during a nearly two-week long project in May. The company provided crane services for a main shaft exchange on a wind turbine with a nearly 400-ft. (122 m) hub height in the Lubbock, Texas, area.

BOSTON (AP) Massachusetts officials are recommending the state double its commitment to offshore wind projects as part of an ongoing effort to transition the state toward more renewable energy sources. A report by the Department of Energy Resources calls for the state to move forward with an additional procurement of up to 1,600 MW of offshore wind capacity, or enough to power up to 1 million homes.
