Three new models of John Deere Power Systems’ (JDPS) 4.5-L engines have received Tier III/Stage III A certification from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the European Union (EU). The turbocharged PowerTech E 4.5-L, the turbocharged PowerTech M 4.5-L, and the turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled PowerTech M 4.5-L engines are the latest models from the complete lineup of John Deere Tier III/Stage III A engines to be certified.
“The 4.5-liter engine is one of our most popular models, so we’re very excited to offer these certified engines that have the same durability and reliability our customers have come to expect from John Deere,” said Doug Laudick, Tier III product manager of JDPS.
“This is also the first time John Deere will offer an electronically controlled engine under 100 horsepower, so it’s a big step to bring the advantages of electronics to lower horsepower applications.”
PowerTech E 4045T
The turbocharged PowerTech E 4.5-L engine features a power range of 85 to 99 hp (63 to 74 kW) and is the first John Deere engine under 100 hp (74.5 kW) to be electronically controlled.
This engine comes with a two-valve cylinder head and incorporates a high-pressure common rail fuel system, full-authority electronic controls, a multiple injection strategy and a fixed geometry turbocharger, as well as all the performance of Tier II/Stage II engines and more.
These technologies enabled John Deere to achieve its goals for Tier III/Stage III A PowerTech E engines, including maintained or improved peak torque, low-speed torque and transient-response time.
The PowerTech E 4.5-L engine’s full-authority electronic controls also enable it to offer improved cold-start performance, precise engine speed control, torque-curve shaping and more. Electronic controls increase productivity, improve fuel economy, lower total installed costs and reduce ownership costs.
In addition to the turbocharged PowerTech E 4.5 L, John Deere also offers a turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled PowerTech E 4.5-L engine that received Tier III/Stage III A certification from the EPA and EU in the summer of 2006. These engines offer a power range of 115 to 140 hp (86 to 104 kW).
PowerTech M 4045T, 4045H
The turbocharged PowerTech M 4.5-L engine features a power range of 75 to 85 hp (56 to 63 kW), and the turbocharged and air-to-air aftercooled PowerTech M 4.5-L engine features a power rating of 99 hp (74 kW).
PowerTech M 4.5-L engines feature economy of design, a two-valve cylinder head, a fixed geometry turbocharger and a mechanical rotary pump fuel system, plus all the performance of Tier II/Stage II.
The simple design and mechanical controls of PowerTech M engines give OEMs and end users flexibility and cost savings while maintaining the same platform as Tier II/Stage II engines. When compared to their Tier II/Stage II counterparts, PowerTech M engines offer improved or maintained peak torque levels and transient-response time, according to the manufacturer.
John Deere has taken a multi-platform approach to emissions regulations.
JDPS offers three engine technology options: PowerTech Plus, PowerTech E and PowerTech M, which are differentiated by the level of technology employed.
PowerTech Plus engines feature cooled exhaust gas recirculation, a variable geometry turbocharger, a modern engine control unit, full authority electronic controls and an electronic unit injector fuel system (13.5 L) or a high-pressure common-rail fuel system (4.5 L , 6.8 L, 9.0 L).
PowerTech E engines feature a fixed geometry turbocharger, full-authority electronic controls and a high-pressure common-rail fuel system (4.5 L, 6.8 L) or an electronic unit pump fuel system (2.4 L, 3.0 L).
PowerTech M engines feature economy of design, a fixed geometry turbocharger and a mechanical unit pump fuel system (2.4 L) or a mechanical rotary pump fuel system (4.5 L).
