The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) has begun construction on the first of four projects to repave I-80 in Solano County. The first pavement rehabilitation project started in January from the Tennessee Street overcrossing in Vallejo to American Canyon Road.

The four projects for a total $125 million will eventually rehabilitate 27 mi. (43 km) of pavement on Interstate 80 from Tennessee Street in Vallejo to Leisure Town in Vacaville. The result will be a much smoother, quieter ride for about 150,000 motorists who use this vital roadway every day. These projects will address the pavement conditions, congestion, and will enhance safety and operations.

“Caltrans advanced $70 million by up to two years in order to correct the pavement on this important goods movement and commute corridor,” said Caltrans District 4 Director Bijan Sartipi. “This is in addition to the $8 million already spent to repair pavement slabs along this corridor.”

Caltrans coordinated closely with the Solano Transportation Authority (STA) on other projects along the corridor.

“I’d like to thank Caltrans for partnering with the STA and the community,” stated Vacaville Mayor and STA Board member Len Augustine.

“Working together to accelerate the schedule for the rehabilitation of this vital transportation corridor has been a cooperative effort and will benefit everyone who travels through Solano County on I-80.”

The locations of the three additional pavement rehabilitation projects that require California Transportation Commission funding approval are: from American Canyon Road to the I-680/80 interchange, from State Route 12 east near Suisun to east of Air Base Parkway, and from east of Air Base Parkway to Leisure Town Road. With CTC approval, these projects are expected to begin construction as early as this summer.

Pavement rehabilitation and highway improvement work started in January and is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2009. Most of the work will be done in the evenings between the hours of 9 p.m. to 5 a.m. Caltrans will be closing one or two lanes and/or ramps in the evenings with detours to frontage roads.

All work will be done within the state right of way and will include: replacing failed pavement areas, providing new asphalt concrete surface, and upgrading the median barrier.
