CEMEX is expected to supply 45,000 cu. yds. of ready-mix concrete for the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project, including 6,300 cu. yds. of specialized self-consolidating mix concrete that was developed to fit the bridge’s design specifications and stringent standards required by CalTrans.

CEMEX USA announced it is providing concrete, including a specialized self-consolidating mix, along with thousands of tons of aggregates for the largest bridge project in the history of Los Angeles, Calif. — the replacement of the iconic Sixth Street Viaduct Bridge.

The original 3,500-ft. bridge, which has served as a backdrop in several feature films, was built in 1932 as a vital transportation link across the Los Angeles River to connect Boyle Heights with the Arts District. Over the years, the structure has deteriorated, leading to several repairs and now, the current replacement process.

CEMEX also is supplying fiber concrete for the structure itself and bridge deck. When finished, the new viaduct is expected to have ten pairs of lit arches along with stairway access and bike ramps.

"The Sixth Street Viaduct is one of the memorable landmarks in Los Angeles, and CEMEX is proud to help give it a much-needed update," said Bryan Forgey, CEMEX USA vice president/general manager of Ready-Mix—Southern California. "CEMEX is deeply rooted in Southern California. Materials we produce here, stay here, so we can build a better future for our families, neighbors and communities."

CEMEX operations in California and the western United States date back more than 100 years with some supplying building materials for memorable projects like the Golden Gate Bridge and Hoover Dam. CEMEX also is currently supporting the construction of the Los Angeles Purple Line Subway Extension, and recently, the company finished supplying San Francisco's tallest skyscraper, Salesforce Tower.

"CEMEX has been part of Southern California for decades, helping provide the materials that are critical in the roads, bridges and buildings we use every day all across the state and the Southwest," said Eric Wittmann, CEMEX USA regional president, West Region. "We're proud to be building a better future in Southern California, providing cement, concrete and aggregates for projects to be used by generations to come."

Concrete for the Sixth Street Viaduct project is being supplied by CEMEX's Los Angeles Ready Mix Plant and CEMEX operations in nearby Victorville are providing 67,000 tons of aggregates.

The total cost of the Sixth Street Viaduct Replacement Project is estimated at $482 million, covered mainly by federal and state funding. The bridge is expected to be completed in late 2020.
