PRINCETON, IA (AP) Plans are on track to build a dam that would create a new 350-acre fishing lake in northern Scott County, said state environmental officials.

Construction is expected to begin next spring on Lost Grove Lake, to be located west of Princeton, said state fisheries biologist Don Kline.

A dam will be built over Lost Creek, a waterway that flows into the Mississippi River, to create the lake and surrounding area for hunting and hiking.

Two tracts of land totaling 120 acres remain to be purchased from an estate to complete the land acquisition for the project.

”It’s going to be a pretty impressive lake,’ said Sara Kosieracki, coordinator for Scott County’s lakes/environmental projects.

She is working with landowners in the watershed area to prevent erosion to keep the watershed as clean as possible.

”If we can keep it clean before it becomes a lake, we can save a lot of money in the long run,’ she said.

State and federal grants are helping landowners plant buffer zones and trees and to construct 17 permanent sediment basins to help control soil erosion.
