Goff Machinery Co. and Mosley Tractor & Supply Inc. are now doing business under one roof at Mosley’s Whitestone, GA, facility.
And so far, the partnership of Tim Mosley and Larry Goff has proven to be yet another business success story.
Mosley is the second generation of family ownership of Mosley Tractor, an equipment service business, which has been in operation since 1958. Goff has a long history in the compaction equipment industry as well as a manufacturing background.
According to Mosley, “Larry and I talked about this for just a few short months before we started this partnership. He needed production capacity for soil and landfill compaction machines and components, and we were looking to diversify and expand our business.”
The companies have fit together well.
“We can provide the production for Goff Machinery, and Larry provides expertise and a tremendous amount of knowledge as well as an existing customer base in the soil and landfill compactor machine and component business. He’s an excellent marketer, promoter, and salesman,” said Mosley.
The relationship has led to a shift in the companies’ focus.
“The key to this partnership was that we wanted to move more and more into the soil and landfill compactor niche, in terms of component rebuilds, used parts, and rebuilt landfill and soil compaction equipment. This industry has become one of our main areas of focus now,” Mosley said.
Before the companies came together, Mosley Tractor & Supply Inc.’s core business was in the machine service industry — repair of earth moving and construction equipment and sales of related parts including ground engaging tools, filters, undercarriage parts and all the parts lines that correspond with repairs. Mosley carries lines of undercarriage parts including Berco and Trek as well as other parts lines including Baldwin filters, Hensley teeth and Valley blades. What drives the business is the shop repairs.
Goff Machinery’s expertise is the rebuilding of landfill and soil machines along with landfill wheels, used parts, rebuilt components and new and used components. For the past 11 years, Goff has been rebuilding landfill and soil compactors and developed and owned a company that manufactured landfill and soil compaction wheels and conversion kits mainly for Caterpillar and CMI Rex machines.
“With my joint venture with Mosley Tractor and the merger of the two companies’ resources, I’m now able to add a full complete rebuild center that will provide field service and more rebuilt components,” Goff said.
Mosley said they moved into this new endeavor in a controlled manner.
“We didn’t just jump in and invest a lot of extra resources, other than what we already had when we joined companies. We simply had shop capacity and expertise available, which was one of the key reasons it made sense to come together. We’ve been able to smoothly transition into component rebuilds and compactor wheel rebuilds, while continuing to market our service and parts business to our grading contractor customer base,” Mosley said.
Because of its rural location, Mosley has recognized the need for service excellence.
“In order for our customers to come to us or pay us to come to them for their equipment needs, they have to have a good reason. Through the years, our total emphasis has been on giving quality service in a timely manner to our customers,” Mosley said.
Goff stated, “We have the capabilities to turn an 816 or 826 Caterpillar or a Rex 335, 355, or 370 into a valuable piece of equipment for soil or landfill compaction. Currently the biggest value is in the soil compaction business. A lot of our business is focused toward dealers, where we can convert a piece of equipment that might be worth say $65,000 into a $130,000 highly marketable piece of machinery after we get finished making some minor to moderate modifications.”
The partnership is a servicing dealer for Al-Jon landfill compactors for Georgia and parts of Tennessee and services customers in Alabama and North Carolina as well.
