MADISON - Gov. Jim Doyle announced $412.8 million for local transportation projects and released the final figures local governments will be receiving in 2008 for General Transportation Aids and Connecting Highway Aids Dec. 17. The funds are part of Governor Doyle’s efforts to support economic development through strategic investments in the state’s transportation network.

“A good transportation system helps attract new businesses and encourages existing businesses in Wisconsin to grow and create new jobs,” Doyle said. “This funding will help build and maintain a transportation infrastructure that will spur economic growth and support job creation and business development throughout the state.”

General Transportation and Connecting Highway Aids provide municipalities with critical funding for local road maintenance. Next year, local governments will receive an estimated $412.8 million from the state transportation fund to build and maintain local bridges and roads.

The 2007-09 budget Doyle signed increased funding by three percent each calendar year for General Transportation Aids. In 2008, 1,923 municipalities will receive General Transportation Aids totaling $400 million. General Transportation Aids help defray the costs of constructing, maintaining, and operating roads and streets under local jurisdiction.

Connecting Highway Aids totaling $12.8 million will be awarded to 121 local government units. The payments will reimburse certain municipalities for maintenance and traffic control of state highways within their boundaries.
