The Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers (IAAP), headquartered in Springfield, was honored March 1 at NSSGA’s annual convention as NSSGA’s State Association of the Year for 2006.

IAAP is the trade association repre-senting owners and operators of stone quarries, sand and gravel pits and recycling facilities that produce construction aggregates.

“This recognition is NSSGA’s way of displaying how highly we value and respect the work of our state counterparts and to reaffirm that we can achieve much more for the aggregates industry and the American public by working together than we can by working alone,” said NSSGA President and CEO Joy Wilson.

“The Illinois Association of Aggregate Producers has demonstrated strong leadership in promoting the interests of the aggregates industry in Illinois, as well as for operations in Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri and Wisconsin,” Wilson said. “IAAP has partnered successfully with NSSGA on aggregate research and has been instrumental, along with its members, in securing passage of SAFETEA-LU and in ensuring the industry is a good steward of the environment.”

Each year, NSSGA recognizes one of its state counterparts for exemplary service to the aggregates industry. The award is bestowed to recognize the work of the state association that has had a significant beneficial impact on the aggregates industry at the regional or national levels.

The IAAP currently represents companies producing more than 90 percent of Illinois’ aggregate.

NSSGA is the largest mining association by product volume. Its member companies represent more than 90 percent of the crushed stone and 70 percent of the sand and gravel produced annually in the United States and approximately 117,000 working men and women in the aggregates industry.

During 2005, a total of approximately 3.2 billion tons of crushed stone, sand and gravel, valued at $17.4 billion, were produced and sold in the United States.
