Approximately 18 months ago, West Virginia set a goal of establishing itself as a cradle for developing new technology. That effort bore its largest fruit so far Oct. 8, when Virgin Hyperloop One chose an 800-acre site in the Mountain State for the $500 million Hyperloop Certification Facility, a 6-mi.

While it is still too early in the project to pinpoint a completion date, the new Wellsburg Bridge in West Virginia continues to take shape. More than two years after the groundbreaking ceremony for the bridge, crews with the Flatiron Corporation of Broomfield, Colo., continue constructing the piers and supporting structures across the Ohio River between Wellsburg and Brilliant, Ohio.

A Mount Storm, W.V.-based contractor has been awarded a $38.7 million project to widen U.S. Highway 340 to four lanes from the end of the Charles Town, W.V., Bypass to nearly a half-mile south of the state line in Clarke County, Va. It is the latest in a series of road and highway construction projects to be contracted by the West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) in the northeastern corner of the state.

The new Herbert Hoover High School campus beginning to take shape near Elkview, W.V., "is an excellent example of planning with foresight," said Federal Emergency Management Administration (FEMA) chief Pete T. Gaynor, who observed earth-moving work under way at the school's construction site Sept.

The Interstate 64 bottleneck over the Kanawha River at Nitro, W.V., could be relieved in about three years. Construction is to begin soon on a new westbound traffic bridge alongside the existing structure. When completed, the current bridge will be removed and replaced with another new bridge for eastbound traffic.

West Virginia's Department of Transportation (WVDOT) is seeking contractor bids to build a long-planned U.S. Highway 522 Bypass around Berkeley Springs. The WVDOT's Division of Highways issued a Notice to Contractors that they would receive bids and sealed proposals until Sept.

Construction this summer along the 14.6-mi. final leg of U.S. Highway 35's four-lane upgrade is bringing the end of the 25-year project within sight, with a completion date now estimated for late July 2021, according to West Virginia Department of Transportation (WVDOT) officials.

After some unexpected structural problems, reconstruction of the Notre Dame Arch Bridge in Clarksburg, W.V., has begun in earnest. Starting on July 20, large concrete beams began arriving on the construction site. The 78-year-old bridge is located on West Pike Street (WV 20), near Monticello Avenue, in the city's downtown, where it carries traffic over Elk Creek.

Motorists traveling on Interstate 70 past the West Virginia Welcome Center can expect to see construction crews making repairs and repaving that section of highway near the Pennsylvania state line after longwall mining moved beyond that location. The interstate improvements are east of Wheeling in West Virginia's northern panhandle.

Widening and rehabilitation construction on the Interstate 81 bridge project across the Potomac River between Maryland and West Virginia is about 88 percent complete, according to the Maryland DOT's State Highway Administration. Construction began in the fall of 2016 and, according to the Maryland agency, the road and structure work is expected to be finished in December.
