BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) North Dakota’s road construction season has started, and it will include more than 200 projects this year, state transportation officials said.

“Nearly $280 million will be invested in approximately 216 construction and maintenance projects,” state Transportation Director Francis Ziegler said in a statement.

Among the largest projects are continued work on the Liberty Memorial Bridge between Bismarck and Mandan, and expanding U.S. Highway 2 to four lanes.

Ziegler said the department is using Global Positioning System technology in its survey equipment to provide quicker information about roads in the state.

“When you hit the button, you have real-time information in an instant. We’ve seen the accuracy double because of the simplicity of the system,” the department’s survey manager, Mike Lang, said of the satellite system.

Ziegler reminds drivers to slow down in construction zones and check the 511 travel information system to find out where construction might be under way.

In a 10-mi. work zone, it takes just 75 seconds longer if the speed is reduced by 10 mph, he said.
