Vieni Associates Inc. (VAI) opened for business on April 1, 2003 as a multi-service engineering consulting practice owned by Charles Vieni. Vieni had served as resident engineer of the New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) for 34 years.

The firm will serve both public- and private-sector clients with a range of engineering management and operation services. These include: custom building; highway and bridge design; operational and human-resource consulting; automated performance-management systems; in addition to training in leadership, supervisory management, transportation operations and safety.

According to Vieni, VAI’s first priorities are to help operational organizations — private companies and town, municipal and county transportation departments — to enhance ongoing safety as well as winter snow and ice operations.

VAI also offers safety consulting and training using the expertise of Ken Swaine, an OSHA-certified safety engineer and expert. A Snow and Ice School will be offered in the fall of 2003. Featuring Terry Vennard, veteran DOT trainer, the school will offer both classroom and hands-on training with snow and ice removal equipment. It will address customized components to all levels of staff, from field workers and supervisors to senior leadership.

“A winter, like the one we just endured, brought home the need for these organizations to continually upgrade snow and ice management by applying state-of-the-art management methods to get the optimal mix of abrasive and chemical materials,” said Vieni. “Keeping workers safe is an ongoing concern, requiring good supervisory training.”
