At its national convention in San Diego, Associated Builders and Contractors Inc. (ABC) recognized three local contractors with Awards of Excellence for work on projects completed in 2002.

The companies and their projects are:

• Benchmark Construction Co. Inc., Brownstone, PA, for its work on the Lititz Watch Technicum in Lititz, PA.

Benchmark turned a challenging design into reality with the construction of a state-of-the-art watchmaker training facility.

• Paul Risk Associates Inc., Quarryville, PA, for its work on the Radnor Meetinghouse Annex in Radnor, PA, and its work on the Port Deposit Office, in Port Deposit, MD.

Paul Risk Associates provided renovations and a new addition to the former American Revolution-era hospital originally constructed in 1718.

It also turned a 100-year-old historic bank building suffering from severe water damage into an elegant corporate office.

• Warfel Construction Company, Lancaster, PA, for its work on the Ursinus College Field House, Collegeville, PA.

Warfel provided an expansion and renovation of existing athletic facilities, including construction of a 58,000-sq.-ft. field house.

“The projects we honor through the Excellence in Construction awards program are true examples of quality construction — from excellent project execution and construction management to top-notch safety, training and employee recognition programs,” said Edward L. Rispone, 2003 ABC national chairman.

ABC’s awards program recognizes the quality and innovation of merit shop construction and honors all members of the construction team, including the contractor, the owner and design team.

This year’s winners, selected from more than 300 entries submitted from across the country, were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unusual challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and budget.
