Calling it a "unique community- and economic-development resource," Gov. Mark Schweiker has delivered $12 million in capital budget redevelopment assistance to the York City Recreation Corporation (YCRC) to build a new state-of-the-art minor- league baseball stadium in

York.

"This project willon a new era for York," Gov. Schweiker said. "This is more than just about anew ballpark; it is about a community gathering place -- a place forconcerts, meetings, graduations, band and cheerleading competitions, and a whole variety of activities that areimportant to mproving the quality of life for this community and this region."

The new stadium will be built in downtown York with excellent access to Interstate 83 and Route 30. It will have 6,000 seats, with lawn seating for an additional 2,000 people. Additionally, the stadium will include playgrounds for children, picnic areas and skyboxes.

It will be the home of a minor-league baseball team and will be used by the York City School District for baseball and football games. It also will be available for use by the community for a number of other events.

In addition, the YCRC plans to build a soccer field and track at the athletic complex. The stadium is expected to open in 2004.

The project is expected to create 30 year-round jobs and an additional 300 seasonal jobs.
