The National Asphalt Pavement Association (NAPA) has announced that P. J. Keating Co., of Dracut, MA, is the winner of a 2002 Community Involvement Award. The company received its award at a special ceremony during the association’s 48th annual convention in San Diego, CA.

NAPA presents it Community Involvement Award to hot mix asphalt (HMA) companies that serve their communities through outstanding programs and projects.

“NAPA understands how important it is for the companies in our industry to participate in and support their communities,” commented David B. Carlson, chairman of the NAPA board of directors. “This award reflects the high priority that P. J. Keating Co. places upon its relationship with its neighbors.”

The P. J. Keating Co. participates in many community programs and activities over the course of a year, such as the town’s annual Spring Cleanup. It provides pickup trucks for trash, large disposal bags and company T-shirts. In addition, employees help pick up trash, sweep, and rake the surrounding streets.

Each fall, P. J. Keating holds an open hour for area residents, employees, vendors, subcontractors, and surrounding communities’ fire departments and police departments. It also schedules tours of its facilities for groups such as Boy and Girl Scout troops, church groups, environmental organizations, sports leagues, and day care centers. Children making the tour get hard hats and quarry stones as souvenirs.

Geologists from the company visit sixth-grade classes at local schools where the children are studying rocks and minerals as part of their science programs. Students are given guided tours of the quarry, view movies and slides about stone and asphalt and are provided with a lunch.

The company also sponsors several community sports teams and makes contributions to local high school sports programs. It contributes to scholastic endeavors such as the Odyssey of the Mind and provides $10,000 in scholarships for local students.

The P. J. Keating Co. also donates materials such as paving stones or equipment and labor to benefit youth and community projects.
