AUBURN, Calif. (AP) Motorists traveling the main highway through the Sierra Nevada mountains can expect a smoother trip, as the state plans to resurface Interstate 80 across Donner Summit by 2012.

Much of the interstate’s original rutted concrete remains from when the highway was built in the late 1950s and early 1960s.

The California Department of Transportation will spend hundreds of millions of dollars to pour a new coat of cement over the next few years. The state transportation commission approved the funding this week.

Caltrans also plans to widen five mi. (8 km) of the freeway known as the Colfax Narrows. The project east of Colfax will require diverting traffic late at night during construction. No date has been set for that project.
