The American Rental Association (ARA) presented awards to Joe Jabbour, Dean Eklund and J. Barry Ghiglione at The Rental Show at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center in Las Vegas, Nev., Feb. 11.
Jabbour, a sales manager of Doosan Infracore Portable Power, formerly Ingersoll Rand, received a Special Service Award. Special Service Award winners are selected on the criteria of an individual not in the general rental business, but who has performed an outstanding service or contribution for the good of the rental industry.
Jabbour began his career in the equipment rental industry in 1971. His legacy to the industry continues to be a strong work ethic and high regard for the individuals in the industry and within ARA. Through the years, Jabbour has worked with generations of families in rental and has provided professional expertise to help their rental businesses become, and remain, successful.
In 1996, Jabbour was the first associate member on the ARA board of directors. He continues to be an advocate of Doosan Infracore Portable Power’s sponsorship and involvement at The Rental Show and he has participated in ARA’s legislative caucuses.
Ecklund received the Outstanding Leadership Award. Outstanding Leadership Award winners are selected on the criteria of providing an example of superlative leadership at the grassroots of the ARA.
Eklund has provided leadership assistance to the ARA state associations in Region Eight following his service as ARA Region Eight director from 2000 to 2003. He also served as an ARA Insurance Services director and chairman from 2004 to 2006. Following Eklund’s term as director, he remained active in developing volunteer leaders for the state associations in Region Eight and the Northwest Conference, where representatives from Alaska, Idaho, Montana, Oregon and Washington meet annually.
Being involved with government affairs, Eklund supported a national regulation for surge brakes and attended the ARA National Legislative Caucus many times. During his service with the ARA Insurance Services Risk Management Committee, new educational products were developed. To focus on issues that are important to the rental industry, Eklund was instrumental in creating the risk management educational series and the trailer maintenance system guide.
Ghiglione received the Meritorious Service Award. Meritorious Service Award winners are selected on the criteria of providing a significant contribution and demonstrating leadership pivotal to the success of a project or program.
Ghiglione worked diligently to provide rental insurance as a member benefit for the Canadian Rental Association (CRA). As ARA’s Region 10 director representing Canada from 2003 to 2006, he studied the insurance benefit ARA provides for qualified members through ARA Insurance Services. His concern was that CRA members continue to have access to affordable insurance specific to rental, so he organized meetings and conference calls between the CRA board and staff, the ARA board, and the ARA Insurance Services board and president/CEO.
Due to Ghiglione’s efforts, H.E.D., the CRA’s endorsed insurance broker, initiated the protected self-insurance plan or PSIP, which is an insurance mechanism available in Canada that provides benefits to CRA members similar to what is provided to ARA members in the United States. Today, CRA member participation in the PSIP program continues to grow and it is a principal member benefit for those joining CRA.
