Beam Construction Company Inc. of Cherryville, NC, is the prime contractor for a new elementary school in Fort Mills, SC. The York County project, valued at more than $5 million, will be used as a prototype for several other new schools planned for the area. Work at the site began recently, and the school is scheduled for completion in the summer of 2001. “Quite a bit of preliminary site work was necessary because of the instability of the soil, but Barfield Grading has done an excellent job. We are digging for foundations now,” said Beam Project Superintendent Randy Derrick. Steve Boheler is Beam Construction’s project manager for the school.

The school, which will have approximately 8,010 square meters (89,000 sq. ft.) of space, will be a brick and block structure with a metal roof; the design is compatible with the nearby Fort Mill Middle School. Although Barfield Grading is the only subcontractor on the job now, there will be more than 100 workers at the site soon. Subcontractors include Gaston Plumbing of Gastonia, NC; Steele Heating and Air-Conditioning of Lancaster, SC; Hinson Electrical of Monroe, NC: Austin Dillion Cook (structural steel) of Hanahan, SC; and Buford Goff and Associates of Columbia, SC. LS3P Associates Ltd. of Charleston, SC, and Charlotte, NC, is the architecture and landscaping firm for the project.

Beam Construction Company Inc. started more than 40 years ago in Cherryville, NC. The company has 180 full-time employees. “At times, we have as many as 225 employees, and we often have 10 to 15 jobs under way simultaneously,” said Derrick. Beam, which operates in South Carolina and North Carolina, builds many schools, churches, and mills. The company has crews constructing three schools now.

Barfield Grading Company Inc. started in 1988 and is based in Fort Mills, SC. The company’s services include land clearing, fill dirt, site preparation, road construction, and demolition. H. Alan Barfield is president of the company.
