Cat Handles Complex Tools With High Hydraulic Horsepower

Construction Equipment Guide

Caterpillar has introduced the 228 and the 248 skid steer loaders that each offer maximum hydraulic pressure delivered to the work tool at any engine speed. A load sensing variable displacement hydraulic pump can send 100 percent of engine power to hydromechanical tools for optimum productivity.

High hydraulic horsepower enables the 228 and the 248 to handle complex tools such as cold planers and stump grinders. And each machine has an integral quick coupler that allows the operator to quickly change work tools for expanded versatility.

The 228, built on the same platform as the Cat 226, has a rated operating capacity of 680 kilograms (1,500 lbs.), and the 248, built on the same platform as the Caterpillar 246, has a rated operating capacity of 907 kilograms (2,000 lbs.). The 228 has a hydraulic pump capacity of 114 liters per minute (30 gpm) at 3,300 psi and the 248 pump capacity is 125 liters per minute (33 gpm) at 4,200 psi. Hydraulic power available to run hydromechanical tools is the highest in the size class of each machine.

Each of the new models is powered by a Cat 3034 direct-injection, four-cylinder diesel engine. The naturally aspirated diesel in the 228 cranks out a power of 41 kilowatts (54 hp). The turbocharged engine in the 248 creates a power of 55 kilowatt (74 hp). Both machines deliver high horsepower and torque for ease of operation at part throttle.

Both the 228 and the 248 incorporate many features that include:

• Pilot-operated joystick controls make the machines easy to operate for less experienced personnel and easy to learn for operators experienced on other machines.

• The wide open entrance, created by using twin tilt cylinders on the loader linkage, combined with properly placed grab irons and steps makes it easy to get into and out of a Cat skid steer loader.

• The loader linkage, angled front steps and the ROPS/FOPS have been designed to optimize visibility to the work tools.

• High engine horsepower and torque allow the operator to run a Cat machine at part throttle in many applications for reduced sound and fuel consumption.

• The hydrostatic transmission optimizes the hydraulic/rimpull match for greater productivity. An anti-stall device minimizes engine stall while lugging.

• A complete line of Cat work tools — more than 30 types — combined with the quick coupler gives each loader great versatility and high productivity in any skid steer loader application. The Cat work tools were developed as a system with the skid steer loaders to optimize performance.

• The Cat line was designed to enhance serviceability. The rear engine door opens 90 degrees and the radiator/hydraulic oil cooler tilts out of the way for easy access to components. Sight gauges aid fluid checks, and all filters are vertically mounted to speed routine maintenance.

The new skid steer loaders are designed to fill the needs of contractors doing building construction, demolition and renovation, roadwork, light utility installation and landscape construction. Because the new machines are durable and easy to operate, they also meet the demands of the rental industry.
