The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) announced May 29 that the California Transportation Commission (CTC) has approved $382 million in transportation funding from Proposition 1B, the 2006 voter-approved transportation bond.

“Every investment in infrastructure is an investment in California’s future,” said Business, Transportation, and Housing Secretary Dale E. Bonner. “Today’s action will support the state’s economy and improve the quality of life for all Californians.”

The Proposition 1B projects that received funding allocations May 29 are:

• Los Angeles — $39 million was allocated to the city of Los Angeles to repair Interstate 710 from the Imperial Highway to Firestone Boulevard.

• Humboldt County — $21.6 million was allocated to convert a four-lane expressway to a four-lane freeway and construct a new interchange on Highway 101 near Alton.

• Sonoma County — $61.3 million was allocated to add 16 mi. (25.7 km) of new HOV lanes on Highway 101 in Santa Rosa and Windsor.

• Alameda County - $10 million was allocated for station and track improvements at the Emeryville Station.

“Under the governor’s leadership, Proposition 1B is paying for vital transportation projects that relieve traffic congestion, which helps greatly when Californians are spending more than $4 per gallon on gasoline,” said Caltrans Director Will Kempton.

A total of $2.6 billion in Proposition 1B funding has been allocated during the current fiscal year to improve California’s transportation infrastructure.

In addition to the projects mentioned above, the $250 million Traffic Light Synchronization Program (TLSP) — a component of Proposition 1B which provides funds for 83 projects statewide to improve the safety, operations and effective capacity of local streets — was also approved. Funding for all TLSP projects will be allocated in the future.

“The Traffic Light Synchronization Program will not only optimize traffic flow and relieve congestion for commuters, it will help keep the economy growing by ensuring the efficient movement of people and goods throughout our metropolitan areas,” said Bonner.
