Dual-Drum Milemaker Offers Extended Drying, Mixing Times

Construction Equipment Guide

The Milemaker line of highly portable and stationary counterflow asphalt plants from Asphalt Drum Mixers Inc. (ADM) offers some of the longest drying and mixing times without sacrificing eight-load portability.

Producing from 144 to 292.5 metric tons per hour (160 to 425 tph), these fuel-efficient plants deliver the high quality mix required to meet SHRPS and Superpave specifications. Due to their separate drying and mixing drums, these plants efficiently process up to 40 percent RAP, effectively blend additives and modifiers, and exceed present environmental standards.

Three models — Milemaker 160, Milemaker 225 and Milemaker 325 — feature a combined drum length of 12.2 to 16.5 meters (40 to 54 ft.), depending on the plant size, and can be customized to fit layout requirements of the producer. The completely sealed, counterflow, drying drum ensures the lowest possible aggregate moisture levels prior to exiting the drum. The separate mixing drum allows aggregate, RAP, other additives and asphalt cement to be mixed more thoroughly for consistently higher quality mixes. The fuel-efficient Milemaker counterflow plants require about 15 percent less fuel per ton to operate than standard drum mix plants.

As a result of this unique drum design, RAP and other additives are introduced away from the drying and combustion zones, permitting higher mixing temperatures and eliminating unfavorable emissions in the exhaust gases. A fuel-efficient Hauck 100 percent total air burner is sealed against the counterflow dryer and operates at extremely low noise levels. Any “blue smoke” generated by the mixing drum is fed around the burner and incinerated in the drum’s drying combustion zone.

The simple design of the Milemaker allows for plant set-up without a crane and the ability to be producing asphalt within a few days of delivery. Sophisticated yet simple, automated controls make the plant easy to operate, maintain and fix.

“You can teach people to run the ADM plants in a couple of days to a week, while other plants often require you to go to the factory school,” said Timothy Mitchell, plant superintendent with DAB Constructors Inc., which operates a Milemaker 350.

Each Milemaker employs easy-to-operate, independent digital processor plant controls, which keep the rest of the plant operating if one plant process fails. These controls go directly to both the input and outputs on the scale, meter, feeders or any additive, avoiding problems with interconnecting devices commonly found on most plants.

With the Milemaker series comes a choice between the portable 27-, 45- or 67.5-metric-ton (30, 50 or 75 ton) Self-Erect Silo (SES) series or stationary 90-, 135- or 180-metric-ton (100, 150 or 200 ton) silos. Casing or I-beam constructed, heavy-duty drag conveyors are free standing and require no back bracing to the silo or ground. An optional reverse weigh silo loadout system on the portable, self-erect silos controls truck loading, stores tickets and automatically prints truck tickets and delivery reports, while a weigh batcher with loadout control is optional for stationary silos.

Reverse-pulse baghouses for Milemaker plants are specifically designed for either portable or stationary plants, with 850, 1,189 and 1,557 cubic meters per minute (30,000, 42,000 and 55,000 cfm) capacities. For aggregate storage and drum loading, contractors can choose from either 18 or 27-metric-ton (20 or 30 ton) cold feed bins, with the number and configuration designed to meet specific operational needs.

The standard single-deck scalping screen on the weigh conveyor with weigh bridge ensures the right size aggregate for different mix designs. Direct fired or hot oil coiled asphalt tanks come in five storage sizes, ranging from 37,853 to 113,560 liters (10,000 to 30,000 gal.). Optional mineral filler and recycle systems are also available.

The 27- to 383-metric-tons per hour (30 to 425 tph) plant line includes the counterflow Milemaker series and parallel-flow Roadbuilder and SPL series. Affordable, reliable and environmentally friendly silos, baghouses, wet wash systems, cold-feed bins and asphalt tanks are also available to assist in producing consistent, high-quality asphalt.
