The Georgia Utility Contractors Association Inc. recently elected Charlie Murren, C.A. Murren & Sons Company Inc., as the 2011-2012 GUCA president at the 2011 GUCA Annual Conference in Amelia Island, Fla.

Murren graduated from Auburn University in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering and is the owner of C.A. Murren & Sons Company Inc., which has been in business since 1986. He started out performing bond release and residential concrete for Pulte Homes. In 1995, his company built the Grand Prix Arena at the Olympic Horse Park and the Olympic Cycling Veladrone and Stadium at Stone Mountain. In 1996, his company moved into residential and commercial site development.

As an active member of GUCA and NUCA, Murren’s committee involvement has included the education committee chairman, safety committee chairman, industry relations committee chairman and membership committee chairman. It is through his attention to detail and his “getting it done” attitude with committee work that has landed him the committee chairman of the year award. He’s made the education and safety committee members more involved than ever before by promoting site visits for local high schools to construction sites so students can see the hands-on experience of what the utility construction industry is all about. Murren sees the association as an essential medium where he can seek advice and learn from his competitors. Since joining GUCA on May 5, 1999, Murren has become an integral decision maker of the utility construction industry, according to GUCA.

Murren also will serve with newly elected officers and directors that include: First Vice President Angela Lance, Peed Bros. Inc.; Second Vice President Regina Shelnutt, Robert M. Anderson Inc.; Treasurer Ed Shipley, Ronny D. Jones Enterprises Inc.; and Secretary Mark Gravel, Willow Construction Inc.

The new associate directors elected include: Ben Corbitt, Ferguson Waterworks; and Jeff Duncan, Cowin Equipment Company. Directors elected for 2011-2013 include: Matt Chatham, Blount Construction Co., Inc.; Brandon Cooper, Construction Perfected Inc.; Richard Krauss, STS/Utiliquest; Keith Plemons, Southeast Connections LLC; and Sanford Stokes, Western Summit Constructors Inc..

Those continuing on the board as directors for 2010-2012 include: Bobby Cates, Ruby-Collins Inc.; Billy Egan, E.F.S. Inc.; Larry Gilmore, Controlled Blasting Inc.; Guy Kenimer, Jr. Gordy Construction Company; and Bryan Ponder, Brock Built LLC.
