Komatsu America Corp.’s D275AX-5 Crawler Dozer Has Tier III Engine

Komatsu America Corp. has introduced the D275AX-5 crawler dozer with Tier III engine. Developed primarily for ripping and dozing operations, the new machine is practical for aggregate, landfill, heavy construction and small mining applications.

Komatsu’s new crawler dozer has an operating weight of 109,900 lbs. (49,850 kg) and features a powerful, clean SAA6D140E-5 turbocharged, after-cooled diesel engine, which provides a maximum net output of 449 hp (335 kW) — with hydraulic fan maximum speed of 410 hp (306 kW). The new engine meets both EPA Tier III and EU stage 3A emission regulations.

Large blade capacities of 17.9 cu. yd. (13.7 cu m) semi-U dozer and 21.7 cu. yd. (16.6 cu m) U dozer yield increased productivity.

Fuel consumption is reduced significantly by use of the lock-up torque converter function.

The new dozer is equipped with the latest Komtrax technology, which sends machine operating information to a secure Web site utilizing wireless technology. Data such as operating hours, location, cautions and maintenance alerts are relayed to the Web application for analysis. The Komtrax fleet monitoring system increases machine availability, reduces the risk of machine theft, allows for remote diagnosis by the distributor, and provides a wealth of other information to drive business efficiently and productively, according to the manufacturer.

Special features of the D275AX-5 include:

• Enhanced Power with Lock-Up Torque Converter and K-Bogie

The D275AX-5 features a lock up torque converter that reduces fuel consumption and offers increased power train efficiency.

The lockup mechanics of the torque converter automatically transfers engine power directly to the transmission, increasing ground speed and therefore achieving efficiencies equal to a direct drive. This results in reduced fuel consumption, faster cycle times and less heat into the cooling system.

The crawler dozer features an improved K-Bogie undercarriage system, which oscillates with two fulcrums so track roller vertical travel is increased. Since the track rollers are always in contact with the track link, there is reduced impact load and improved durability on the undercarriage components, according to the manufacturer..

• Complete Operator Control

Komatsu’s new ergonomically designed Palm Command Control System (PCCS) gives operators maximum control, offering a relaxed posture and fine control to reduce operator fatigue.

PCCS provides precise and responsive control to both the tracks and blade in direct proportion to control lever PCCS movement. PPC control combines with the Komatsu hydraulic system for increased fine blade control. Thumb push buttons on the travel control lever simplify transmission gear shifting.

• Electronic Control Power Train for Smooth Operation

The D275AX-5 utilizes a new powertrain electronic control system that improves operation and productivity.

Smooth, powerful turns under various work conditions are achieved through the Hydrostatic Steering System (HSS), which is powered by an independent hydraulic pump that transmits engine power to both tracks without power interruption on the inside track. Counter-rotation is available for minimum turning radius, providing increased maneuverability.

The HSS system on the D275AX-5 is equipped with a pivot turn mode switch on the dashboard. With the switch engaged, or when the dozer reaches the limit of HSS during a turn, the turning side brake is engaged, which results in a short radius pivot turn.

A preset travel speed selection function enables the operator to select fore and aft travel speed from the present patterns. This reduces manual gear shifting frequency during machine operations, and, when combined with the auto-downshift function reduces cycle times during repeated round trip operations.

• New Cab Design for Optimal Operator Comfort

A new hexagonal cab design and large tinted glass windows provide increased front, side and rear visibility. Air filters and a higher internal air pressure combine to prevent dust from entering the cab. The cab mounting uses a new cab damper which provides shock and vibration absorption capacity.

The mounts combine with the new K-Bogie undercarriage to soften shocks and vibration while traveling over adverse conditions. A soft spring in the cab damper isolates the cab from the machine body, suppressing vibration and providing a quiet, comfortable working environment. Air suspension operator seat is now available as an option.
