More than 15,000 people entered the gates of Michels Materials Limestone Quarry Sept. 15 in Neenah, Wis., to attend the popular family outing “Quarry Quest.”

The event, which required more than 250 businesses and 1,000 volunteers, provided an opportunity to educate attendees about the mining and construction industries, all while raising money for children’s charities and Environmental Education Fund throughout the community.

Attendees were able to tour a working quarry, ride and explore giant excavation machinery, and participate in a host of fun, hands-on educational activities. Children were given the chance to become miners for the day and prospect for fool’s gold, mix up batches of concrete cakes, and construct walls with bricks and mortar.

Over the past decade, the event has attracted 200,000 people and raised more than $1 million for local children’s charities and the Quarry Quest Environmental Educational Fund, which is dedicated to funding grants for classroom supplies, activities and field trips related to earth science, geology and construction.

Major sponsors of the event included Michels Corporation, Miron Construction Inc., FABCO Equipment and Operating Engineers Local 139. Other sponsors included Northeast Asphalt Inc., American State Equipment, Associated General Contractors of Wis., Miller Electric Manufacturing, and many more.
