ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) The U.S. Air Force has begun construction on a facility at Kirtland Air Force Base that officials said will play a role in the proposed "space defense." The Albuquerque Journal reports the Air Force Research Laboratory's $12.8 million Space Control Laboratory will consolidate efforts on the New Mexico base.

United States Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, welcomed an announcement from the U.S. Air Force that it will build a $20 million Nuclear Command, Control, and Communications War Reserve Material Storage and Shipment facility at Holloman Air Force Base.

OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. (AP) — The $1.3 billion construction of a new headquarters for the U.S. Strategic Command at Offutt Air Force Base is being audited by the Defense Department. The Omaha World-Herald reported Congress ordered the investigation because the cost of the project has grown nearly 10 percent and the project has fallen at least 20 months behind schedule because of design flaws and mold problems.

United States Senator Martin Heinrich (D-N.M.), a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, welcomed an announcement from the U.S. Air Force that it will initiate the design of an $85 million project at Holloman Air Force Base to construct a new MQ-9 Formal Training Unit (FTU) operations facility to house three MQ-9 Attack Squadrons.

As part of the largest construction project ever awarded in Vermont National Guard history, crews are making improvements to the taxiway that military jets use at Burlington International Airport. The roughly $40 million project also replaces the apron where Vermont Air National Guard planes park and refuel.

DAYTON, Ohio (AP) An Ohio company has received a $9.1 million contract to relocate a security gate at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base near Dayton. The Army Corps of Engineers said Dayton-based Messner Construction Company is scheduled to complete the project in September 2019.

MacDill Air Force Base, located approximately 4 mi. south-southwest of downtown Tampa, Fla., is the base for the U.S. Air Force's Air Mobility Command, which provides airlift, special missions, aerial refueling and aeromedical evacuation for the armed forces.

A crane operator from Dawes Rigging & Crane Rental maneuvered the Link-Belt crane into place. The weight of the plane was transferred from its display pedestal to the crane's extended boom. The pedestal's bolts were released one by one. With the last, the aircraft lurched free, and was briefly “airborne” once again.

A gate on the south side of Eielson Air Force Base is opening this week to give construction crews easier access. The Daily News-Miner reports (http://bit.ly/2rjqvUr ) the gate is opening Thursday. It will be for construction-related traffic only. Much of the construction is going to be on the new F-35 fighter planes scheduled to arrive in 2020.
