Most family businesses have humble beginnings. Unfortunately, most of them fail, too, within a short period of time. But the history of Roper Brothers Inc. , a general contractor in Fountain Inn, S.C., just outside Greenville, is one of those remarkable tales of a business that has grown into a great success over 35 years while also staying completely family-run.

Brittain Griffith likes to play in the dirt. Millions of cubic yards at a time. The self-proclaimed "high-tech redneck dirt mover" likes to go "as hard and fast as I can every day." That, coupled with an unyielding desire to push the limits of his operation's capabilities has made his company, Sonora Construction, one of the largest excavation companies in Texas.

A Houston-area contractor is moving 2.5 million cu. yds. of dirt on a Howard Hughes Company project in Cypress, Tex. The $10 million project will create a 2-mi. long mitigation lake system and about 300 acres of future residential lots and common areas in the Bridgeland Subdivision, an 11,000-acre, master-planned community that will eventually be home to 65,000 people northwest of Houston.

At both its indoor and outdoor exhibits at ConExpo-Con/AGG 2020, Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas demonstrated working prototype models of electric-powered compact excavators. The company also is displayed a full range of wheel loaders and excavators, including new and enhanced models.

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas introduced the HL930A and HL975CVT wheel loader models, and launches the first models in its new A Series that feature Cummins Performance Series engines at at ConExpo-Con/AGG. Hyundai also will demonstrate a remote-controlled Hyundai HL960A wheel loader for use in hazardous applications at exhibit N11601 in the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas will display a full range of wheel loaders and excavators in its two ConExpo/ConAGG exhibits — N11601 and F6914 — including new and enhanced models, Performance Series models (Stage 5 emissions compliant), integration of new services under the Hyundai Intelligence Care brand, and two working prototypes of electric-powered compact excavators.

Hyundai Construction Equipment Americas announced that its parent company, Hyundai Construction Equipment, recently entered into an agreement with Hyundai Motors and Hyundai Mobis to develop hydrogen-fueled excavators and forklifts, with development starting this year and plans to roll out the technology as soon as 2023.
