A $119 million Albuquerque Rapid Transit (ART) project will culminate with an 8.8-mi. electric-powered bus line with 20 stations on Central Avenue, formerly a portion of Route 66 that runs through New Mexico's largest city. The project is under way and the new rapid transit system is expected to open in fall of this year.

As of May 9, project bids for a rail park located in Flathead, Montana have opened. The proposed Glacier Rail Park will a rail-served industrial facility serving Montana's northwest region. Partial funding has come from the US Department of Transportation via the Transportation Investment Generating Economic grant.

Sound Transit unveiled plans to kick off one of the most ambitious public transit capital investment programs in the nation's history. By the end of 2017, Sound Transit will be planning, designing or building 24 train and bus projects in Snohomish, King and Pierce counties.

After five years of service and with the California High-Speed Rail program moving rapidly from concept and planning to full-scale construction, CEO Jeff Morales announced that he will step down from his position early this summer, after the Board of Directors is expected to select a replacement.

Gov. Tom Wolf announced new project approvals through the State Transportation Commission totaling more than $40 million in funding that will support an estimated 375 jobs in rail freight projects statewide. “Keeping our extensive rail freight system in good shape is a common-sense way to ensure a sound foundation for the state's economy,” said Wolf.

Authorities say 12 people were killed and 12 injured after a suspected gas explosion in a railway tunnel under construction through a coal seam in southern China. Officials in Dafang County in Guizhou Province said on a local government website that those killed had been trapped inside the Qishanyan Tunnel after a blast on May 2.

Connecticut's U.S senators are calling for increased funding for rail investment along the Northeast Corridor, citing 7 million jobs along the line and $50 billion in annual contributions to the nation's economy. “NEC has a state of good repair backlog of over $28 billion,” said U.S Senators Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, both Democrats.

A judge rejected opponents' latest attempt to stall California's $64 billion high-speed rail project, but will consider their arguments before the state issues voter-approved bonds this month. Sacramento County Superior Court Judge Raymond Cadei ruled against a temporary restraining order sought by Kings County and other opponents.

Chicago's commuter rail agency is planning $216 million in construction projects this year. The plan by Metra targets 29 stations, 21 bridges and 29 road crossings. Metra and its railroad partners announced it Monday. Construction is expected to begin next week and continue through fall.

A portion of track that caused a derailment at Penn Station, creating major delays for commuters at the nation's busiest rail hub, was identified as a potential problem in an earlier inspection but wasn't thought to pose an imminent risk, Amtrak's CEO said Thursday.
